Log rack features?

I bought 30 IBC cages a few years ago, the neighbours had some, I kept 20 IIRC. I bought a trailer load of unsplit logs in the summer, they filled 3 IBC cages. I split about 18 IBC cages of logs for neighbours and received 4 IBCs in payment. All seasoning with tarps on top of the cages. I already had about 8 IBCs with seasoned and semi seasoned logs.

I'm interested in the log store for next to the stove. We currently have wicker baskets, these have slowly deteriorated, accelerated by a small pups teeth.

I prefer to bring in a large quantity of seasoned logs at a time, saves fannying around in the dark and the rain we need a fire and nobody has bothered to bring any in.

How about some kind of addition to hold kindling?

unless you add more to that its still going to get wet, rain does come down at different angles depending on how the wind blows

If @julianf's weather is anything like ours in South West Wales (probably given he's not that far away) then a log shed like the one above in an exposed location will season firewood quite happily. For a number of years ours was just a simple 2x4 structure stood off the floor, sheet of OSB on the bottom and corrugated tin on the roof. The walls were just some livestock netting.

Yes the rain got them damp but the wind soon dried them out (think about washing on a line, wind will dry it far faster than heat). A short stint in the porch before on the fire dried out any surface damp. If we'd run out we just picked the drier logs from the middle to put on first.

If you look at say a yorkshire boarded shed with 25 mm gaps its quite surprising how little blown rain actually comes in.

We have a log pile outside currently, however, often, we just burn pallets.

Either way, the wood is damp, and needs some time inside before use.


Often it just gets piled up around the rayburn, but the dry stuff ends up on the bottom, etc.etc.


Im thinking of welding up a split hoop (use one side, whilst the other is drying, and then swap over) and i figured id look on the interweb to see if there were any "features" that i should integrate.

but thats tiny. Im thinking more like 3 foot wide, by, maybe 7 feet high or somthing? Split some way to "using" and "drying".


Again, we have "real" logs this year, but normally we burn pallets - but they still turn up wet, and need drying.

I shall not be paying the £322 asking price for it though...

Im not sure wheels are a good idea if im going 7 feet high though.

Simple box is fine with me - im fine with it just being functional.


So, any "must have" features that im not aware of?

They will keep the wood, they have a burner and think it has value to sell Please dont tell them, lime is not the best firewood..

did not need to dry when i was a kid...but there again old rubber wellies and shoes always burnt well, even better than cut up old car tyres, i kid you not. My carbon footprint was maxed out by the time i was 10
