Locking wire another type

Have been looking for a second hand tool DMC for ages found one.
I have an aversion to lock wire it is looking to impale my fingers at any chance especially where a mirror and one hand is required to thread and twist, + I always like to fold the finished end back on itself so no sharp end

Something we use over here, it's like a split tube, you hammer in.

Soft solder the ends of the stranded wire first .... no free wires to stick you with , pull the long free ends back into some suitable heat shrink tube and shrink it over the free ends .

Used to use those safe-t-cable things on engines (particularly borescope inspection plugs) invaluable when there's zilch access, easy to use but could never get as much tension on them as was possible with lockwire pliers. Even the OEM installed ones are floppy.

Plus a lovely bit of lockwire takes skill and is something to be proud of.

Normal lock wire is single strand not stranded, you haven't lived till you have been stuck with SS lock wire slide in like the preverbial in a shirt sleve

caught my youngest son, some yeas back, cutting piano wire with my lockwire pliers. I threw them away in the end as they were useless and it used to pee me off when I opened the drawer and there they were. Their replacement aren't a patch on the old pair. I don't use lockwire very often now but when I do it is a frustrating experience.

They absolutely did, there's a number of things wrong with their animation.

Good pliers make all the difference. The amount of people I used to see struggling with 8 inch lockwire pliers in a tiny gap was astounding...I always used 6 inch pliers and if I ever needed to use heavier gauge wire I just twisted it manually.

I'm interested how the aviation industry views lock wire that has crimps that could be dropped during installation.

I guess the crimps would need to counted as part of the audit trail.

Not that different to pinging the end of the twisted wire pigtail off into oblivion when you snip it, or dropped washers, or drilled rivet tails etc...FOD checks SHOULD form part of each and every task with no exceptions.

If you drop a crimp, you find it.

Can you tell I worked In training in the latter part of my career?

Also if you're using the tool properly it's not that easy to drop them, they come in a cartridge that you can use to load into the tool, you don't need to fumble about with loose crimps.

I’ve got so lock wire pliers, blue point I think, which are / were aviation spec. The cutting jaws were filled with silicon inserts to grip the cut bit rather than let it fire off into space.

The amount of junk left behind from production was always surprising to me

Always irritating when you find a handful of other bits before the thing you dropped.
