Locking ball joint

I am planning a custom monitor stand, and looking for a lockable swivel mount for the actual screen mount. I have something in my mind something like a ball joint with a collar which can be tightened to lock the position. I am sure I have seen this kind of thing in the past, but cannot for the life of me think what they would be named in order to google possible suppliers.

Any ideas?

The alternative is a home built ball joint with a hollow and solid mild steel ball a la Brundles catalogue with a captive nut and short bolt to lock the position, but a small neat commercial item would be the preferred route.

Ball and socket head as opposed to a pan and tilt head.

Yep ball and socket head. Manfrotto do excellent ones.

Would the camera ones support a 27" LCD monitor? Not sure how strong the locking mechanism is on those. I have found the 1.5" RAM mounts, anyone any experience with RAM mounts?

The Manfrotto HD ones will. They are used with broadcast spec cameras.

My guess, something will be fixed to the ball so it can be swivlled and tilted and it will be locked in position hydraulically?

It is a bowling ball welding jig, its at work at the moment so I can finish it off so I don't have any better pics. Its now got a small table mounted on it so I can clamp either the piece or a vice to it. I'm just making a foot switch to cut off the air to the ram at the moment. Its made from an old pulley off a dumb waiter for the base, an air ram I got cheap from an autojumble, the bowling ball I won for 99p off ebay, the red cup is an old fire alarm bell I got out of a skip and the top ring is an old brake disk with the hub removed, the rest is just scrap out of the skip at work.
