Another vote for mint with the mate desktop, before that I used Madriva. Tried Gentoo, Slackware and Arch but still find mint and Ubuntu variants’ the most convenient. I still dual boot with windows 10. Never had any issues using Linux but then again I build my own computers so I was able to check hardware compatibility of the parts but I think compatibility is becoming less of an issue now as Linux becomes more popular. The Linux live distros such as gparted, Caine, NST etc are very handy to have for fixing issues.
On the issue of updates, I have mobile wireless broadband don't use it much but once when I dual booted into Windows it downloaded updates and used up all my data. I think I was paying £10 for a one GB with talk talk.
