before you E bay it, Thos Proctor have a welding repair division, dont know if they charge for an estimate, or if it needs to come over to Gateshead branch, possibly worth a thought and they are Lincoln agents.

I have already spoken to these guys

I had thought about taking it to them as there only 12 miles away or so and they said a lincoln guy comes once a week so I might still do that.

The welder has history with another local firm 'hunters' but they were less than helpful in the past on a number of occasions where I've been involved so they won't be getting my business but I may still try it at Proctors.

Thanks for the suggestion though, just wish I could fix it myself/with the help of others on here!

have you tested the rectifier or disconected it to see if it still trips the circuit breaker on the higher settings

I assume that is the unit that is cooled by the fan at the bottom left in this picture? We tested it and the voltage increased from 30 something volts up to 40 something volts through the amp range which from what I gather is correct, although at the higher ampage setting we could not check for voltage stability as it would trip.

Or do you mean something else?

Finally got the welder dropped off this week at T. Proctors. They said they'd ring me Wednesday when their engineer was in but didn't hear off them. Left them with instructions to ring me with what they found before they start replacing expensive parts.

Not too fussed about not hearing off them. If they don't get back to me end of day next Wednesday when their engineer is in again then I'll ring em and have a twine lol

Phoned in today, welder's been fixed, came to around £60, So after I've bought an earth lead, this welder owes me £170. Pretty pleased with that!

I almost don't want to say, as it was something simple!

The technician found the tiniest fray in a wire that was shorting out to an exposed connector face on another wire. It was causing the wire feed not to work, as it was shorting on the board, in turn it was what was causing it to trip out too.

Chuffed because they threw in a NOS 4m earth cable too!

What's NOS? Is it a type of earth clamp?

New Old Stock. It was an earth cable they had made up for a customer who ended up not coming for it so it sat in a bag under the desk for 5 or so years.
