yes....mostly Perkins....there were hundreds of them knocking about early 80sDidn't they use the same dc arc generator unit, behind a Ford or Perkins engine for site work?
Bullet was a nickname so both got called the same by some people.......the upright one was called other names as well....sure you can imagineI can remember using one of thease in the mid 1970's but the bullet was vertical
I think the upright ones were SA200 type (tapped windings) whereas the horizontal ones were always SAE (variable inductor) type. I know we never got the SA style in the UK, GKN-Lincoln were selling SAE300's powered by, as has been said, perkins or fordsBullet was a nickname so both got called the same by some people.......the upright one was called other names as well....sure you can imagine
Im not sure what the difference was between the flat and the upright....I think the upright was more powerful.....its a long time ago
There were some of the upright ones in the yard (Lincoln Electric UK) but I dont know where they came from.......I suspect they were from the Big3 Lincoln operation up in Scotland who supplied all the American Oil Companies with Lincoln stuff imported from the USA........when we first merged it was a real mismash Lincoln Norweld, Big 3 Lincoln, Lincoln Europe and Lincoln Electric were all seperate companies........I was Lincoln Norweld and I was given the job of training all the others about the Norweld products....which was fun (most of them were of the opinion that USA made is best)............not long before there was also GKN Lincoln Electric in Welwyn Garden City, who could also use the product names but had no connection at all, in fact they were part of ESAB..I think the upright ones were SA200 type (tapped windings) whereas the horizontal ones were always SAE (variable inductor) type. It was when the oil first started up in Nigg Bay, McDermotts, Santa Fe etc etc...........they probably brought them with them......Big 3 Lincoln set up a big place in Delny near Invergordon......even the staff there were American initially.....my later Boss was a Texan that had been sent over to manage that supply and ended up in charge of a massive company..Interesting, all the UK SAE300s I've seen have been GKN Lincoln branded
