Lincoln 185

Hi been offered a Lincoln 185 compact in good working order with new torch and regulator just want to know a ball park figure of what they are worth secondhand .was going to buy a sealey 230 or Oxford 180 new but this has come up any advice would be great cheers

im not a welder but been on here a while Lincoln are a good make

ask him whathe wants for it tell him your the buyer not the seller if he said i dont know offer 50 quid he will soon split blood

your reply after well if 50 is not enought you know what your after then and then go from there

see it working there is meny a person that bought a welder got put in a garage and left to rot

If doesn't say a price offer 150, should be enough to get him to say what he really wants.
Obviously all depends on welder condition

i paid £350 for Lincoln Compact 205 in near enough mint condition... i don’t think I’d be keen paying more for less “oomph.”

but, it might be a newer model than mine and might have seen even less work so your mileage may vary!

too much for a 185 unless its absolutely mint. I'd say £400 if it's in reasonable nick.

very good machines for the nominal capacity, though.

They are a very good mig , but be aware the start is a strong 35amp, which you will struggle to do 1mm with unless you use .6 wire , I have used my brother in laws , do check the power switch is smooth to change settings (voltage) as if stiff or notchy walk away , have been told you cant get parts for these anymore but dont know if its true , very good if in good condition and you are not just doing car tin work. price dependant on condition , £5oo would be mint in my opinion, including as new torch.

that’s a fair, and easily overlooked point. I’ve not struggled on old cars with mine, but I’m perhaps considered “long in the tooth” when it comes to welding crap metal!!

35a is definitely hotter than most could comfortably use on thin steel, especially those who are a bit newer to the game!

cheers, dab and go dab and go eh ,damn good on thicker stuff for a 185 tho eh.and lets face it a small roll of .6 wire and tips isnt that spendy for those odd jobs if needed .

Warranty, for starters..! not got experience with Oxford beyond a 150 year old oil-cooled monster at an old workplace, but think they get an okay rep on the forum?

if the Lincoln was a more realistic price and you knew it was coming from a loving home (like a certain TIG machine I bought the other week..!) then I’d buy that in a heartbeat.

as it stands though, your mate simply wants too much for it and there’s every chance it’s “donald ducked,” so... Oxford!
