Lighting my new home workshop.

Im thinking of using armoured (SWA) cable rather than conduit as it will make for a far easier job think.
The workshop is going to be fed with a 50a supply via a 10mm SWA cable.

What diameter of cable should i be looking for for the lights and sockets?

Id like to get as much of the materials my self as possible.

if your doing the lights in armoured min is 1.5mm 3 core . flat twin and earth min is 1.0mm sockets 2.5mm 3 core . for the price difrence 3 core is best rather than 2 and use the 3d core as the earth all suitably coloured sleeved of course .get some prices and then give city electrics a ring and negotiate a cheaper price

Don't forget the glandpacks for the SWA, you may reconsider when your sparky puts in the price for making off all those glands!.

Do the hook plates and suspension hooks do the same thing or are the hook plates for the top end?

suspention hooks on the fittings and hookplates on the roof or u can mount them on a 20mm galvanised conduit box using strip conectors for joining cables with 3 core flex drops to fittings http://www.qvsdirect.com/galvanised-steel-conduit-through-box-20mm

Got 6 twin 5ft high frequency flourescents with daylight tubes on the roof and another 6 singles on the walls. Plenty of light with all those on.

Depends what you use it for, if you do bodywork/painting you want as much light as possible, we have arches of lights at work, 4 on each "wall" and 4 more overhead to provide a shadow-free light.

Ah the look of a workshop before the novelty has worn off. All clean and tidy, floor paint immaculate, no dust hiding under benches. Mine looked like that once! Top job anyway.

Looks good, I would certainly look for some insulation, even putting a plywood coating will probably stop enough of the condensation. The problem I have found everything is fine when the place is empty with a bit of air flow. Once you fill it (you will) the problem get worse. I speak from experience, that first frosty morning it will 100% be the most expensive tool or piece of kit that has been dripped on. I also think space heater can make it far worse if there is no insulation.

Its surprising how much difference it makes. Its looks plenty bright without them but if youve had them on then switch them off you fairly notice the difference.

lighting round the walls is a must if u have vehicles in. when the bonnets up it kills the light or if u are working on wheels and brakes it saves using handlamps that get in the way . the more the better wish i could have them in mine but theres 2 much crap and gear

Norlander what kind of insulation were you talking about that could be attatched with carpet tape?

sorry, I only just noticed your question-over here here is rigid foam insulation available-very easy to handle, cut and fix, very lightweight, so maybe a similar product is available in UK? it has some soundproofing effect as well though thats not what its for of course.
