Lighting for workshop

In my shed extension that I built last winter (extra 8'x8') I went with 3 batten lampholders with low energey bulbs. They are kinda recessed between the joists, to fit a strip light it would have to cross the joists and hang down a lot lower.
The lampholders were about £1.50 each and the bulbs 20p for 3

The bulbs are 12w I think, so 36w in total in that part, and I find they give a better colour and spread of light than a 4ft 40w strip light

just to go back to stroboscopic flicker.

There is phosphorous in the coating and this gives 'persistance of vision', i.e the light output does not drop right off when the voltage is at zero, i.e. there is a certain amount of luminence.

I wonder how you will go with these.

We use quite a few of these and although they are supposed to be long life they do seem to go very frequently and we are continually replacing them?

We've been using CFL bulbs in our house for years, and I can only remember 2 blowing, sure there aint somehting up with your leccy?

no, not as far as I'm aware, voltage is normal and I've no reason to believe we have a lot of voltage spikes? They are on about 10hrs per day I suppose?

You are not alone ,we used the same sort of bulbs in our stock sheds for 18 hrs controlled environment .. they only lasted about 9 months before they got noticeably dimmer , once a new one was installed you really saw how bad the rest were .

I wish I had had had a lux meter for I think I'd have renewed them long before they got as bad as they did.

I used to work in Sketchleys dry cleaners many years ago and it was company policy to renew every fluro tube once a year due to the degradation of light quality.( It is easy to spot stains under very good light but you miss a lot in a failing light )

I'm playing with some of these new 3 watt LED gu10 bulbs and so far whilst the light is no where near as good as a brand new fluro bulb it is sufficient to do the illumination of the kitchen enough to do things by and when we want more the over cupboard fluro go on or the under cupboard ones go on .

the gu 10 leds are still no where near i bought 6 of em and gave them to kitchen fitters and punters to try . they havent got the same spread of light as the 50w halogen lamps

leds are no where near yet but i think they will get there eventually but as brightspark said they dont spread i suppose they could alter the lense on them though

i found the light was localised to about 30 degreese and intense as snooper says if they spread the leads angle out over they would be much better spread of light

they have started to make par 64 stage lighting cans now with leds but cant imagine them to equal the original 1000watts

you can still get those bulbs although they might be reflector bulbs such as a par38 but you would have to go a shop that supplies the entertainment industry such as disco's

I have some boxed unused 80w par38 bulbs here, if I anyone wants them I could do you a good deal

But people still complain about headaches if they work with flories. The migraine sufferers group where up in arms about banning filament bulbs for green purposes. What I find incredible is that the powers that be say only 20% of light from a filament light bulb goes out in light, the rest is wasted heat. Its not f..ing wasted its heating my house. The uber politicians are thick...

With expensive electricity rather than cheaper gas.

The radiated heat may make you feel warmer rather than having to heat the whole room, which is an added bonus.

the main people that moan about flourescent lights are workers in offices .thats been overcome by renewing the fittings with cat 2 difusers that directs the light strait down and doesnt afect sumone on the next desk

We've got fluorescent lights in the kitchen - they hum like mad in the bedroom directly above when someone comes down for a midnight feast. Keep meaning to investigate, stiffen and/or damp the mountings. Or fit sensible lights.

I use them in workshops. They tend to go dim after a few years, but are reasonably cheap to buy and run.

This lightbulb regulation nonsense drives me mad. I had a single 40W perl doing most of the lighting in my office. You can't buy perl any more as they aren't as efficient as clear, but the light is in the corner of my vision and clear is too bright. I'm going to fit a lamp shade and likely will need a 60W clear to give me the same light.
