Hoping to buy one of these on e-Bay, but there seems to be a wide range of prices. What do the most expensive ones have over the cheapest? I'm not looking for anything special, just one that will give me eye protection. Any recommendations or advice would be very welcome.

I would avoid the very cheapest ones on eBay. Probably the best budget autoshield on the market is the Parweld XR914H @ around £60. The more expensive units such as ESAB, Optrel, Speedglas etc. have better made helmet shells & higher quality, Swiss made optics.

There are several differences:
1. Reaction time: look for one that is 1/25,000 sec ( 40us). Stay away from ones that are 1/400 to 1/10000 sec.
2. Window size. Most are standard. Mine was a few mm over the most common. Then there are large-view ones.
3. Fit and comfort. Better ones will ten to fit better and more comfortable for long-term use.
4. Shell type: More expensive will be better plastic rated for overhead welding.
5. Replaceable inner an outer covers and comes with extra covers.
6. Adjustment sensitivity range, real cheap has high/low, better has pot to set threshold.
Mine is an Antec, cost me $54 off ebay. 1/25,000th sec response, 2-pos delay and sensitivity and #9-13 dark setting. It also has a slightly larger windoe that most (but not the big screen type.) It works real well but is not rated for overhead welding and I would not want to wear it all day

Still, I now have some very handy excuses:-
No power washer or wheel barrow so can't do any gardening.
No welding mask so can't do that "Can you just weld this for me"
No snowboard so I'll just watch everybody else straining themselves while I enjoy a beer in the alpine sun.
No money so can't take the missus cloths shopping.

There was a group test of these in Car Mechanics mag last month. I bought the Sealey which came out as recommended. I ordered from a Ebay seller in the afternoon and it was delivered next day, the price was good too. It's comfy and works very well for me. The silver colour is a bit silly though - would have liked black but at the price I don't care.

I'll second the Parweld one - via weldequip - only used it a few times so far on my welding course at the local college but it seems to work well ...

I've moved house since two of them so never to be seen again ...

Yup, the Parweld and Stick welder are tucked up safely in the garage. Haven't even touched them for a few weeks, god-damn uni exams!!
I've just emailed Steve for a quote on a Portamig, I've got a few rear crossmembers (and the other BBQ) to make and i've been saving up for a portamig long enough!!
Got some more pop bottles if you need them.
