Light automotive panel work

Hi all, first post here (great forum). I'm completely new to welding, and on a pretty tight budget (looking to buy second-hand). My van has a few spots already cut out that need new sheet metal welding in - nothing over about 5" x 5" in size. I have an old uncle with some welding experience from back in the 60s as my guide. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm proficient enough with ebay, just completely lost on exactly what I need! All help much appreciated.

Have to be careful with second hand welding equipment, you just don't really know if its any good. Stay away from wolf and SIP as second hand units tend to have wire feed troubles. Clarke units are ok if you can find a good second hand one. If your buying on fleabay, try finding a seller that is close enough for you to pick the machine up and physically test it before parting with any cash

Hi,

have a look around any sizable car-boot/Sunday market as there's usually a few welders around and they're usually Clarkes (blue models).

Ask if he's a regular trader in the same spot and if you can take it back if it doesn't work. Always a risk, but it'll be cheap.

What is your budget?

If its a few hundred quid then PM Weldequip, I am sure he could source you a new or ex demo unit, atleast then you will have some Warrenty if anything goes wrong. Its not as easy as just buying a machine either, you'll need wire and gas etc, both of which I am sure he could help with.

I was really hoping to not go over £100 (I realise this is unrealistic) but as close to that as possible would be ideal. I'd only be using the equipment once on this van, and would sell it on once I'm finished. Is hiring recommended or does it tend to not be value for money?

what is the thickness of the metal you wish to join ?

I'd estimate about 2mm thick.
