Pursuing the bay of thieves for a lifting magnet, as to be expected they are all alike and all from China.

can anyone tell me if the stated lifting capacity is to believed.
Im looking to get a 100kg unit

I don't know if the cheap magnets meet the ratings but the ratings are a best case and many applications will likely reduce the effectiveness considerably.

+1 to that. Think about how the effectiveness of a magnetic drill (rotabroach) is reduced when sticking to thin stuff.

Maybe have a look at data sheets or technical information on brand name/bona fide stuff to get an idea of their performance and then apply your own multiplier to the Chinese gear in the light of this.

I got a 60kg one which is good, but it’s dependent on how it attaches itself. Mine attached itself to an underwater pipeline whilst I was stood on a bridge about 8m above. If it was 60kg it would still be there now. It ‘let go’ with some force I can tell you, and pretty much came back to me at around face level due to the natural recoil of the rope which was attached to it.

I’d only buy a switchable proper unit with a certificate of conformity if you’re thinking of lifting stuff in the workshop. Sod 100kg falling mid air.

Thanks guys, pretty much the conclusion I came to.

It was for picking up stuff like machine vices etc. So would never see anywhere near max swl

Even if the magnet was good quality I wouldn't recommend it. The potential irregular surface and paint would create an air gap reducing the lifting capacity, the section thickness of the material is likely no more than 15mm, see graph in the above picture. Too many unknowns to work out a SWL.

We used to use a 1000kg lifting magnet. Made by Walker Magnetics, not some FongKong special from EBay. Used to use it for lifting big lumps of steel onto the big milling machine before any lifting holes had been drilled into them. ( You could mill around the outside and top of a block 2,4mx1,2m x 1,2m ,to give you some idea of the size of the mill!)

Never had anything fall off, but was always clean unpainted steel, and we were not allowed to pick up anything over 750kgs. Straight lifts only. No putting it on the edge of a plate to get it to lift up at 90 degrees to how it was lying. You had to work out the weight, not guesstimate ,before you were allowed to lift anything with it.Company rules.. Did work better once the mill scale had been removed. Was also brilliant for getting plates on and off the big surface grinder. It came with a chart on the side with conversions for maximum dia round bar you could pick up. Had a v machined into the base. With all today’s Elf and Safe Tea malarkey I could see this being a nightmare item to use in a company. Another useful tool lost to the demise of common sense which,unfortunately is no longer common....

Buy one, test it in a safe manner. If its rubbish you'll get a refund. Id also consider it more like a set of badly assembled parts, replace the rivets and check inside.

Even then, its not like your going to be standing under it, respect it just like you would a car raised up just on a screw jack.

Lets face it they are ALL made in China, painted and badged up however the reseller wants. The higher costs are profit and paper work. Im sure it will be fine. The biggest problem is improper use. As I will be the only one to use it, on my gear, I think it’s safe to ****-ume it won’t fail me. (I like my toes)
