level two welding

not sure if this is the right place to post but i will be having difficulty next year with the theroy. like splater and dip penitration and so on can any one hear explain some theroy to me ?? for my level two c&g course?

thank you for moving my post i was not sure wot it fell under in the topics on the fourm. um i need to know more about the theroy side to welding i under stand heat transfer is how far the heat transfers on metal from mig and when welding two metals together in a lap weld u need more heat and so on and for most arc welding increase the voltage according to the thick ness of the steal i could be worng mind u like i said put me in front of a welder ill have a go but theroy is my weakness. also wot grade of mig wire es or bs standard is it and wot is it coating name ect

Hi David,
I'm also doing C&G at college. You should have been given a book? I assume you passed L1 ok? Some of it is common sense, some if it is just having to read it over and over until it's sunk in. As you know H&S is a major part of it, make sure you don't get any of that wrong.. my friend failed because he couldn't answer the H&S.

All I can suggest is keep reading the book, and the thicker the metal, the more power you need! In reality you just get the feel for it, with how much power, wire speed, wire thickness and steel thickness. I passed L1 without reading much of the book, because I spent loads of time practising, then looking on youtube, here etc for tips on what I'm doing wrong. Once you get that, all the questions you get on C&G tally up to the experience you already have. Oh and go mental on the H&S side.. turn everything off when changing wire, electrodes etc, no liquids, fume extraction, welding masks, clothing arc burn etc.

L2 is heavy on vertical welding, so make sure you understand what you are doing with that. The theory is that when you make a solid into a liquid, it will flow with gravity!
Can't help much on the steel grade, but I do know its a copper coat on MIG, and the old BS names are gone now, everything in EN as we got shafted into the EU..

If you have more specific questions, I'm sure some people can help as I'm no expert! But I can do a mean weld.. lol!

yeah H&S is heavy in everything i will bow up on that. we dont get our books till jan so will probably post further more in jan. just when our instructor gave a biref insight to what is on the theroy side i was quite confused.
does any one know what you need to pass on the book out of 15/20 ect
