aiming for getting the job done for around the price of 6pence and a cuppa tea?

What are you trying to do exactly? The only one I've played with was a pipe welding machine about 18 years ago. From memory it ran at a constant speed and the wire was fed in at an angle of about 45 degrees from a wire feeder very much like you'd find in a MIG.
The wire had to be forward of the TIG, and it was separately switched so the TIG had time to warn the metal up before moving forwards and introducing wire.
No reason why it wouldn't work on a DIY basis with a TIG torch, a MIG wire feeder and a little button on the torch to switch the wire feed, but I'd imagine speed of travel would be quite important.
