lens colour

im using a yellow outer lens at the moment, but its getting a bit scratched up so ive ordered a clear and a blue from r-tech and a new inner as well.

question is, what is the blue for? ive only ever used yellow wiht the mask since i got it and its nice and clear, gives a slightly green hint when welding.

is the blue better for poor light conditions or something?

oh well, i will have a try when they arrive hopefully some time next week as ive got a few things to make. wanted the clear as ill be on my back for some of the welding so wanted a sacrificial lens so to speak but the blue may be interesting

I'm sure advertising may tell you differently but, it's personal preference.
If you like welding aluminium with a yellow lens use yellow.
If you like everything looking pink then that's fine as well.

There are far too many combinations of welding processes, operator techniques and workshop lighting to say one is better than the other.

Personally, I prefer as clear as I can get for everything but then I rarely do long stints of welding in one go.
If I do an all day stint I tend to get 'tired' eyes so I'd probably try a few shades of lens or a colour changing helmet if I was doing that more than once or twice a year..

i have no complaints from the yellow lens, it may not make much difference at all but the blue one got me curious as lighting can be an issue for me so thought maybe a blue would hep with that but we will see i suppose. i dont normally do more than an hour or 2 at a time so maybe the clear will be fine

It's just whatever suits you best.
I know some people who's eyes don't like the first 10mins of welding on a Monday morning then they are fine for the rest of the week.

Only thing I would say is get an eye test/check if you think you have any problems rather than trying random lenses but if you are happy your eyes themselves are working fine feel free to experiment.

If the lenses for your helmet are particularly expensive you might even want to keep one for 'best' (low amp tig welding) then one general beater lens for the splattery stuff

already wear glasses and vision isnt an issue, just a lighting issue in the shed that could probably be sorted with an LED buld replacment.
