What I like about it is that there's no electronics on the engine, not even a stop solenoid on the injector pump.

Yes mercedes om602 400k miles isn't unusual mine is only at 165k so barely run in.

had a 5cyl 300D merc in Africa.....had over 500,000klms, smoked only on start up...great car but oh so slow.......
the rare turbo eng wasn't much better...

They built engines for Merc, and were allowed to use some in their own vehicles

A car I really love the look of, quite fancied...but wasn't brave enough to buy (most for the reliability but also it's a bit small for an estate and rather lardy...but so pretty).

The only bits to have given me a problem aren't Alfa bits - the GM V6, and the ZF gearbox that sends the drive to the back wheels.

GM had three goes at designing a cam drive system that didn't stretch chains and thus cause cam timing issues - common problem across all cars it was used in - from Cadillac to Suzuki.

And ZF used a collapsible spacer to set bearing preload and put it against a shoulder on a shaft - which is slowly hammered itself over during the 90,000 miles it covered - losing the preload, wrecking the bearing the in the non-serviceable gear box.

As least, they told me it was non-serviceable and wouldn't supply any info . . . but what do they know? Sorted it a few years ago - only 2 days to get the box out, and three to get it back . . .

I took like the estate - couldn't find one when I wanted one, so ended up with the saloon.
