LED PIR floodlights

I mainly fit ansell floodlights 2 years warranty. ive fitted at least 60 at a school. only had 2 go back under warranty. most are over 5 years old and on every nite on on photocells

How do you know which LEDs they are using?

The V-TAC ones state it. Usually if they're using a decent branded LED they'll say it, if they don't it's a cheap one.

It is disgraceful just how many of these LED lights are failing.
Yes they give long guarantees - knowing full well it is too much hassle to keep taking them down all the time.
I USED to be a great fan of the 2D lights - but they don't last anywhere near as they used to either.

The faulty unit is recovered on replacement. Or do you fit a new one elsewhere and illuminate a different area. The Iidl led/pir i fitted in Jan started to fail 3months ago.

I don't get too grumpy about it - I used by grandads greenhouse for the same purpose at thier age


To be honest I often look at my grandsons and think they are "a little bit too good" - they don't seem to be naughty and mischievious like little boys should be!

All is not lost thou - my vixen 10yr old grandaughter makes up for their shortcomings. She really is a sprited little child.

When I get home from work and my Wife has been looking after the grandsons.

She recounts stories of "the boys did this and that". I'am thinking that does not seem too bad at all!

I personally must have been a horror as a child - but when you speak to my aging 87 year old Mother - she seems to have forgotten all the bad things I did and says "he ate well - always finished everything that was put in front of him".

When you mount the floods put the take off point inside a building as a switched spur , use a 3 amp fuse inthe plug , a longer cable , extending the lamps cable using a water proof joiner . Then when a light fails all you need to do is switch it off , unplug , cut the plug off , go out side pull the cable through the hole and unscrew the old light unit. It means you have far less risk time stuck up a ladder in inclement weather if it needs preplacing & it's really evil weather .

Another thing I've also done :- We have a PIR LED adjacent to the dog loo area . it used to last a year if we were lucky . I ended up making a stainless steel hood to protect it from the worst of weathers but still give a decent flood of light where I want it . So far the this last light is over 18 months old. & usually gets triggered by pooch at least twice a night .

if you think your grandaughter is a vixen you was so welcome to try my daughter into everything and everything caused no amount of trouble and i knew i had her

but what dad said went and every now and then id lose it with her vixen wasnt her 10 demons put together was her

she had me in school often she was lethal to many

though i cant say anything i was worse than she is/was and i know it as well

I been buying the ones from Wickes.

We got a new puppy - so I have turned my garden into daylight so she can have a wee on winter evenings.

The other week I removed all the old Halogen ones and fitted LEDs everywhere. I was super impressed with the 10w bulkhead LEDs below

I put five of these along our patio/kitchen extension area (50w total).

And three PIR 30w LED spot lights opposite on my detached garage facing them about 30mts opposite (90W total).


140W in LED lighting - total of eight lights has turned night into day.

To be honest it is too much - I have been turning the on time down and tipping the spotlight angle down abit so I don't upset my neighbours too much

I like the led COB bulbs. Good for several thousand hours.

I have a 10W COB E27 thread in an outdoor garden spot light fitting, mounted above the garage. IP44 rated. Been up 4 years, still perfect.

I've not had any issues with the LEDs failing on PIR lights.The issues I've had are them being on when they aren't supposed to be. One of mine was fine for quite a log time then would be on during the day. Did all the usual, clean the sensor etc. Sometimes it would fine after a total power off. I did read some stuff about the LEDs interfering with the PIR circuit.

The ones I have/had are 50w units.

The problem we have these days it trying to differentiate between a cheap ebay one most likely from China or one costing twice-three times as much from the local electrical wholesaler that looks exactly the same and probably came from China.

It's all very well having a warranty but it's no guarantee of longevity. In the old days the only people who offered long warranties were people who were confident there would be no returns. By their very nature faulty flood lights are a pain, often up high and the wiring on the new one may not be the same.

I've bought LED downlights in the house that seemed half as bright within a few weeks and places like LEDHUT ask you till fill in a paper document for the warranty even though you bought online and have full record. They know full well most people won't bother.

I need these to fit at my Dads old house in Portugal. Hence the need for reliability.
Rain won't be such a problem but baking sun and 35C for 9 months of the year will be.

I bought an led floodlight in the local professional electrical place, it must be four years ago at least. Its been excellent but it was not cheap. I gave up on the cheapo 12 quid halogen ones from the diy chain stores, as i seemed to be up fixing them or replacing them constantly.

I want to put a moving arm on the shed wall, a waterproof light unit for working under. I dont care for PIR sensors but I am tempted by these as they have a remote. If the battery is not adequate I can run a dc cable to it.

That looks good especially being IP 65 . The higher the Ingress Potection number the better the weather proofing & resistance to moisture getting in.

I thought "IP" was just a code - not a pair of words with a meaning.

A professional electrician told me a few years ago that led was great but the light output diminished over time. Maybe the same today or maybe they have improved the design?

Pick COB if you have a choice (think - "next generation led"), easy to tell in the flesh as the "bulb" looks like a yellow postage stamp, normally square. My 10w work lights are Ok for general lighting, the 2x20w floodlights are impressive.
