I bought 3 LED battens to supplement the lighting in my garage. I fitted two and one of them died in short order (Few weeks). The spare was swapped in. They were an internet purchase so I did a rough autopsy on the dead one. As mentioned before, you have cut them open to see what's gone wrong. I found a blown resistor and blown blue ceramic capacitor. I know nowt about electronics so whether they were the sole cause, or a symptom of something else going wrong, I don't know. I did get to salvage a long wide strip of aluminium out of the batten which I will probably use for Tig practice at some point.

About twice the price for an IP65 one, two 70w battens gets you 15k+ lumens, quite sure cheaper are available.
Worth every penny to me, better light, no warm up time, no buzzy tubes or ballasts, no dodgy starters...

Postmortem results are in. Took the unit off the wall and it had a rattle, came from inside the PIR unit. Non serviceable, cut it open with the hacksaw. One of the black things had come off its legs. Well it’s not all doom n gloom ,I’ve now got a floodlight in my shed!
So to finish this off, J1nx and this post were right. Just 'fixed' one unit. 108 smd LEDs in there and two had failed wiping out 50% of the board because they are wired in series - so each led failing took out a seperate bank of 27 leds! I pulled the failed leds off the board, cleaned the contacts and bridged them with solder. I will do the other light tomorrow and then these two 100W floodlights will replace the failed mercury lamp at one end of my shed.
One failed led was obvious (burnt). The other i found by bridging the contacts carefully and seeing which brought the bank back on.

Depends how the driver is designed - if it's constant current (most likely) then it should be okay as all the LEDs will be seeing the same current. If it's constant voltage then yes each LED will see more current.

Probably not as LED drivers within fixtures tend to be constant current rather than constant voltage. The driver should regulate the voltage to deliver the rated current regardless of a few LEDs being removed and shorted out.
Not that I can measure it but what Dave and Ed have said seems to be what many youtubers report who have done this. I think bigclive commented on this on one of his repairs.
Anyway... i had a not working light and now I have a working one. If it works for another year that saves me buying a new light for another year..... if it fails quicker it was just a learning experience!
