Hi all,im a new poster having lurked for some time now, basically ive dabbled in the world of welding, having bought an arc welder ages ago,and ive got and old Draper 1302S mig welder that ive owned now for what must be the best part of 20 years,in all that time ive never really learned properly.
Now ive bought an old VW Beetle, that although is in fairly reasonable nick, will be sure to need some work for the dreaded mot,and i would like to do this myself.
So, i have a few questions, for you experts.
1) Firstly my machine, the wire feed is intermittant,if i pull the wire with pliers,it feeds ok,but looking under the side cover the wheel is slipping, and whatever i do it doesnt feed properly,is this something im likely to be able to sort myself or could it be new machine time?
2) Can i use gasless wire in my machine, without the co2/or is it not that simple?
3)Basically my welds look like ive spat mashed potato at the metal, and has a sort of grey soot covering the area,im sure the co2 is ok,what could be the problem?
Im going to give the welder a clean tomorrow night, and have a look into the wire feed problem, but can anyone recommend a reasonable welder for car body repairs?
TIA
Ian
