Learn to weld

Hi all,

I'm quite interested in learning how to weld (never done it before, not even held any welding gear)

I'm one of them people who like learning hands on, and I'm always in the garage tinkering with cars and things (and even a trailer i've just got my hands on)

Anyone know where i can learn somewhere in the North East of england, and how much do you think it will cost?

To be honest, I don't really know much about welding though, ive heard of TIG, MIG... as my mate is a welder (works on bridges) but said he cannot teach me as he does massive metal welding and cannot do little things like what i would like to do (welding things on trailers, and cars...)

Regardless of what your mate welds for a living he could still show you the basics just to get you started. Maybe he just doesn't have the time/inclination/patience to help his mate out?
If you look at the 'learning mig welding' section there's a thread listing some tuition places, you might find something in there which is near you.
Other than that, get yourself a welder and practice!

Oh a real welder then ?

He doent need to show you on his kit does he, when he can do it on yours. (After the usual 15 minutes of grinning at it and boasting of what "his" (ie: the one owned by his company) kit will do)

Just get yourself a decent 2nd hand mig welder and have a go yourself!

My mate welded up an exhaust for me, let me have a go for about 30 seconds and i blew holes into it as it was badly corroded (but im a cheap skate and didnt want to buy a new exhaust!)

Thats all the practise i had before i bought a welder of ebay, now ive welded in 4 or 5 panels with good success.

If i showed people on here pictures they'd probably say the welds arent exactly neat,but theyre solid and do the job!

Practise makes perfect, just bite the bullet and have a go

Three bits of advice,
Practice
Practice
Practice.
I bought my Mig welder never even having seen one before, a week later it was going in the canal, then it clicked and I could do it.
A quick lesson from a mate could save a lot of fannying about, but once you get a feel for it it comes quite quickly.

Go for it.
