Thank you Pete, interesting to know that inhibitor can be put into a rad, would never have thought of that, I wil be studying the Vaillant website for instructions on the boiler fill etc , thanks again

Hi. if it is like my Vaillant it will have 2 small taps under the boiler, they both have plastic levers on them and are for customers use so no tools are required, they are connected together with a thin copper pipe both need turning on at the same time.

I've just done a TRV swap, didn't drain it (or turn boiler off....)

Just rag and bucket and snatched it, exact same valve that had failed so reused both nuts and did it quick

and by the time you had finished mopping up you could have done it my way

i was lucky last week . leaking pipe and stop tap wouldn't turn off . was gonna just cut the half inch copper pipe under floor and whip a stop tap on quick while live good job I didn't and got water board to turn it off outside for free cut the pipe and the nuts on the tap would hardly go over the pipe and took some getting on I would have got soaked

i think I will ask the daughter for a few hundred quid . I've just taken 3 of her radiators off re valved them stripped and painted them for nothing just stripped the bathroom out gonna re plaster it fit walk in shower new bog and sink new floor and tile the lot even do sunk in ceiling lights , free

I'll give you double that to do mine.

Neighbour tried to change a rad without draining down the system. Plan was to use a pipe slice to cut the pipe next to the seized lock shield, shove his thumb over the end of the pipe to stem the flow then quickly put a new lock shield on. Problem was he gashed his thumb badly on the freshly cut pipe, cutting a perfect disc in his thumb, and went light headed at the sight of the blood so he let go the end of the pipe!

reminded me of 8 years aprox ago nextdoor was banging on my back door at 8.30 at night begging can you help my rad in the bedroom was making a noise so i thought i would cheak if there was any air in it so runs round up to the bedroom and there was a 3 foot stream of water coming out of the top of the radiator it was not a sealed system so as the water was coming out it was filling up as fast the heating had been on for 4 hours and was as hot a hell on trying to releaase the air from the system he had not turned the heating on and when opening the blead screw he had removed it and it had shot across the room i had to put my finger on a red hot rad for 5 mins while he looked for the screw and fixed it

at the end the floor was so soaked i went down stair and put a screw driver through the plasterboard and 1/4 of a bucket of water come out as well as the carpet was soaked as well it was in the middle of the sommer but ended up havinf a new carpet and under put down

Probably 30 years ago I had a call from my sister in a panic so I dashed around to see water pouring through the ceiling of their recently bought house.
The brother in law, wanting to paint behind a bedroom rad said "you know how they always leave extra pipe under the floor boards" (this was news to me)

He had turned the 15mm rad valves off, slackened the inner nuts and tried to lift the radiator enough to clear the brackets hooks and pivot it down onto a box, unfortunately whoever had fitted the rad had not tightened the compression nut enough and a valve and olive came off the pipe at one end.

What made matters even worse was that he had a a primatic cylinder so that even after turning off the mains it would have to empty a large domestic cold water tank in the loft plus probably around 20 gallons from the cylinder.

luckily the water was not too hot and he managed to stop some of it, when I got round he was Kneeling on a soggy carpet with his thumb on the pipe trying to support the radiator

Its funny looking back but at the time it wasn't.

Same here, I still don't charge them but they usually give me something. its surprising how many mates and neighbours you have . Unfortunately when I need something doing I can't do well myself I never know anyone in that line of work.

the only time i got miffed lady down the road over 3 months must have called me over 6 times mostly for silly stuff but ok the last time her mouse did not work i went round powered off the mechine and pluged in the mouse lead she said oh is that what was wrong i did say please just cheak the simple things before phoning me

wouldnt matter if u made a mess there by the looks of the carpet and decor

I like the angel one charges, I live in a tiny hamlet of about 25 homes , people come to me for woodworking jobs and I do them foc or for last job a jar of homemade marmalade, karma will occur.
