Leaking tyre bead.

Hello friends.
What causes a leak from a tyre bead/rim. I got some Ford Focus st wheel with this problem. I took it to a tyre fitter and they cleaned off the corrosion put some bead sealer on but the problem has come back few months later.Any one got any ideas as to a cure.

yes get the tires off and buff all the rust off with a flexidisk in angle grinder. I had to with mine garage didn't do it well enough

As Brightspark said but if they’ve cleaned it off and it’s returned you may have a porous alloy. Last time my brother had one he just used Holts Tyre Weld and that fixed it until th3 tyre was replaced due to wear.

Doesn't take much to let them leak sometimes, minor corrosion or a bent rim. Label on the tyre, bit of bead damage, etc...
Clean it up better, put a couple of layers of sealant on (making sure it dries between coats), then when it's dry seat the bead and over inflate the tyre as much as is safe for a few minutes, then let down to the correct pressure.

Almost always works, innertube is the other method!

No, but for those that can it's an easy solution to little leaks.
I don't actually like tubes because a small puncture that stays in the tyre causes it to go flat fast, whereas when it's tubeless it can stay up for weeks or longer and be less of an inconvenience. But there are times when a tube is very useful.

As has been said, it's nearly always corrosion on older wheels, in which case the only good long term solution is to have the wheel blasted and refinished.
Bead sealers are just a quick fix, and I've rarely seen them last more than a year. A few months is far more typical.

If you're planning on keeping the wheels, best option is to get them refurbished. There are plenty places that'll do it, and as long as you don't want any kind of fancy finish, it's generally not that expensive.

Guessing the fitter "cleaned" with an old hand wire brush. This isn't enough, really need to get in there with a powered wheel. Alloys tend to be worse for this.
That's assuming it isn't the valve or damaged rim or tyre. Soapy water and mark where you see the bubbles

I made myself a manual bead breaker mounted to the wall for this very reason. Got fed up of leaky beads.
Bought some of the bead sealer and slathered it generously into the bead seat while someone else levered the tyre off the bead. Worked well.

A Peugeot moped I had was letting the rear tyre down all the time even after the bead was cleaned up so we used a tube of bathroom mastic round the inside of the bead then put the tyre back on and inflated it to 60psi. Left it overnight then set the pressure and it didn't go down again.

I think this is the case.These wheels are common to bead leak.Need to get the tyres off and have a look what's going on myself.
