I'd recommend the o/p uses Yorkshire fittings (solder ring'))if They are a novice , much easier to get to grips with . Have solder ready too just as a 'top up ' when you see the solder appear from the fitting . Oh heat. The pipe not the fitting as well. I use a smear of jointing compound over the olives on compression fittings , just helps lubricate things and gets a goood seal in my mind .

It did cross my mind, But done plenty of soldering in the past & brazing. So feeling confident that I can do a good job! Preparation seems to be the one of the main things to do right. The biggest struggle is the pipe is in a tight spot!

I always put a smear of compound on olives whether it’s water, gas or oil. Only takes a second. There’s also a lot of poor quality fittings even sold by plumbers merchants. I put ptfe on an olive if I need to to get out of trouble. No harm in it being there though.

I've heard of putting PTFE on compression threads to smooth out their tightening, not to aid sealing.

Make sure it’s well drained and manual open the motorised valve when draining.

Some people don't tighten enough, others too much and crush the pipe. It's all down to feel which comes from experience. I prefer copper olives if I can get them.

yes copper olives require even less torque to seal them, its funny how u just get a feel or hear the squeak as they seal

Indeed, and it doesn't take that much practice.

most merchants supply brass now and they need a fair bit more torque to make them squeak!

i use whatever comes with the fitting, copper ones get bashed about and deformed in my box! so it tends to be brass for me if i am using my own

That’s correct, if there is a (unlikely) failure of governors then copper olives will burst under high pressure, more likely on LPG

Nothing wrong with a bit of paste or ptfe on an olive, can help it seal. Never put it on the threads tho
