Leadloading Ally

I have a few wings on Landy Ser 11 that will need filler. Can Birmabright hold this with proper solder/primer without reaction? The Birmabright may have a small percetage of Magnesium. I know there are aluminium powder fillers. These may rattle out on those flexible panels.

Never heard of lead loading ally. The secret to proper lead loading is tinning the metal, you can get aluminium solder, but it is horrendously expensive and you'll need loads of the right flux.

If the dents are bad I'd beat them out and fill with conventional filler, modern fillers work very well.

If you have a workshop manual for the Landy there is a section on annealing Birmabrite before beating it.

Thanks ZZ. Trouble is Craddock list lots of stuff they either aint got or when you look at it closer it`s only part of a wing or panel. I know the inner wings alone are about £160. each.


Will check it out but I can see me getting the filler out and looking like a snowman.

Well that's one way of putting it.

Personally I don't agree, Landrovers are workhorses, not Chelsea Tractors. When I rebuilt my 90 I knocked the worst dents out but left the majority in, a; because I couldn't be arsed to take them out and b; it shows it's been used, worked, loved, not wrapped in cotton wool.

Besides trying to fill a flat panel and it not show will be hard to say the least

Yours looks like it`s just out of the showroom compared to mine and all the previous ones I`ve had .

It`s not the flat panels I refer to but mostley spike holes and tight contours that have been pulled out and dollied. I don`t mind the undulating ripple that spot welding produces .....that is a Landrover.

Chelsea Tractors don`t have 1950s design engines and leaf springs anyway.......they are usually the territory of coilers. lol. Bashed up Landys are for people who play with vehicles on play sites or lanes and are actually travelling nowwhere. Else they are just lazy or don`t care to fix em.........JMO

Using loads of tonce in a wing and being covered in tonce dust is just a part making a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Show your proud of your landy's history, lets face it even new ones have don't have straight panels.

Even L322 rangies had ripply lower door panel from new.....

Just joking mate....it`s only little bits really at contours...........not flat sanding. When it`s finished it wont be no Sows Ear either.

Agreed, as above, I've done a bit of lead filler work. The tinning, necessary to make the lead adhere works only for steel, not aluminium. Incompatible alloys.

Just beat out the dents and use a skin of filler to finish, or metallised filler.

You can get a sanding kit and adapter for your vacuum for nearly dust free sanding of filler. http://www.screwfix.com/prods/93672...branet-Dust-Extraction-Sanding-Block-70x198mm

Seems expensiver per sheet, but the perforated sand paper doesn't clog and lasts a lot longer as your vacuum cleaner sucks the dust.
