Interesting point then why do they pay 5 quid for a duff battery?

Because the lead salts are valuable, just not to you or i trying to recover them in our garage.

The one i melted down was fine too, outside of the amount of grime that floated up from (i assume) the deposits on the inside of the pipe (chunks of stuff with the internal radius of the pipe, looking like scale)
Top tip -
Remember lead is heavy (doh)
What i mean to say is its easy to keep adding to an old pan, and then realise that the handle probably isnt up to the job of lifting it again - but what do you do then? If you leave it, it just goes hard, and then you have a big lump of lead that you have to saw up.....
(yes, i made this mistake - i chanced it with the handle, but i wasnt too happy!)
I remember using mole grips on the old aluminum pan we used, there wasn't a handle.... the whole thing was a temporary lash up, two car axle stands (one upside down), held together with fence wire to hold the pan "crucible" in place, then the propane torch put underneath the pan, again held in place with wire... worked a treat. Sorry Parm, it was an HSE nightmare, but we were young and daft, what can I say.. would I do it again like that???? probably, I'm still as daft, just older ....

Been there, done that, thrown the pan away for when I forget how close it was to going horribly wrong and risk using it again!!

Costs me what I would get back to drive to the tip / scrappy. I just leave them outside the garden wall and the battery fairies take them overnight.
( they don't leave anything under the pillow for them though)
The big issue with doing that kind of thing is it just encourages those kind of unsavories into your area. If people get used to seeing them pick stuff they won't bat an eyelid they day they are taking the stuff from your driveway.

Last lot of lead I melted was from a job. The company install team installed a new fire alarm in a old house. The old alarm cabling was in lead sheathed cable. Think lead version of Copper MI cable.
The idea was, if it melted and shorted out it would alarm out, same as if it went open circuit.
The panel, detectors and bells are sat in the head office store.
But I was allowed to "have it away", it melted down and poured very smoothly, made some nice weights for a friend who used them to stretch cloth.

First time, I forgot about it , found it was gone. Second time , admittedly I left it out on purpose just to see how long it would take. I actually wish they would take stuff from the front of the houses round here, place looks like a scene from Shameless from time to time

Was fishing down at Berry Head a few years back, when a diver popped up and asked if I wanted to swop any of the mackeral I had caught for some lead weights. I agreed , then about half hour later he re surfaced with a big net bag full of lead weights between 4-8 ounces.
There were hundreds of the bloody things. He said there was a wreck about 60-70 yards out and there was a conger patrolling with 4 big hooks in it mouth dragging weights behind it !!
