Lead lock fitting sizing?

Where the outside of the lead pipe is scuffed up and that - ie generally not smooth - i assume they still seal ok?

Im not sure that ive ever tried to sand lead - im thinking it probably smears more than sands.

I would have just belled it out and sweated a brass sleeve in. that's how they used to do it . balls to new regulations there's still lead pipe in

UTC's seem to seal on anything, wiping is an option but wouldn't want to do that one as my first go
