lead load or weld

HI I've a small rust split just at the edge of a flange ( in the centre of the picture). I was wondering if its best to lead load or Mig weld? its about 1 mm wide by 1 cm the metal surrounding appears sound although thin. I don't like the idea of body filler/filler glass as they are porous or does any one know of a new product. Also when fixed what's the best rust treatment to use. I'm going to use epoxy primer after. Any suggestions would be much appriciated

Hello Islandjj,

you'll need to weld up the hole, lead is just for filling really although you may get away with it, but I suggest welding up the hole.

The correct way is to weld and use the lead to smooth out, although these days modern fillers are better than lead.

I must confess that i have repaired much larger hole with just body lead and smoothed it with body filler before i had a welder. Like others i would suggest welding it but for quick cosmetic repair lead or fiberglass filler would be sufficient. It sounds that you want to do it right. Important thing is to get all rusty and porous metal removed before welding or fixing it any way or form.

I would clean it up, stick a copper backing plate in tight and just run weld over the top and flap disk it back.

I would have thought welding it was a better option. I have a similar repair to do on a wheel arch and was planning doing exactly what Mr S suggests above. Ultimately lead is still a filler and as this is a hole, not a dent, you would be better replacing the metal I would think.
