LDV 1.9D problem

Hi all
I have just bough an old 1995 LDV Pilot with 1.9D XUD , it has supposadly have 21K on the clock with old MOT`s to prove, when i get the [a[er work i will find out, i cant see it though from inspection on other areas like seat, kingpins said to be slightly worn.

Anyway, i have been trying to get it to run after a while of being not run, around 18 months, i have had a gerry can of diesel and bypassed the filter as it is broke so that is the next job. done this to see how it runs. Now it fires but wonr keep running on its own. it does at times but wiull not rev and cuts out after a few seconds.

what i have done,

clean fuel gravity fed to pump.

checked the G plugs and got back 0.7 ohms ( 1ohm then minus the meters 0.3, and checked when removed from engine)

now i am thinking the problem could be the injectors not getting fuel through as its getting to the injector as i cracked the feed and it spits out on all four.

oh and white/grey smoke shows from the exhaust when it trying ti fire and runs a little.

what your opinions. i want it running and fettled soon a si will be using it as a camper. Hey and dont worry i do have plans to fit the XUD TD in it after its all up and running, i can get half decent money for this if its running.

Hi, white/grey smoke is unburnt fuel or water ingestion. So is the cooling system pressurising? Maybe head gasket from frost damage lifting head or cracking something. Injector problem? Maybe not considering mileage. Incorrect timing, IIRC the sprockets on these engines are not keyed, but only held by the tightness of the bolts. Low compression, maybe from having been stood. Over to you.

So a lot to go at, for a start, Cant tow it yet as the rear brakes are stripped for a rebuild.

How do i find if the cooling system is pressurising ?

I have a compression testing kit somewhere, i think its for petrol engine thoguh, i will check if i find it.

Hi, Take the rad cap off and does any water get pushed out with the little bit of running it does? A petrol engine compression tester is no good for a diesel engine, the compressions will be too high.

You won't do a compression test with a petrol kit, if it has sustained frost damage I would expect the radiator to be shot as its much weaker then the engine , you say you have bypassed the filter are you sure you are not getting any air leaks, is the filter 1 pipe in 1 out ? Most Arnt so do you have the correct pipe into the fuel

Most fuel filters have additional outlets, usually incorporating the leak off lines as well.
If it's just two pipes, in and out, that's fine, but if there are more and you've plugged them it could cause problems.

I'm thinking in general terms here, but perhaps the gravity feed isn't enough. Why aren't you using the vehicles own fuel tank? It may be that it has a pump somewhere and may need some fuel pressure for the injector pump to work correctly.

Yes a petrol comp kit will not do, i just cant remember which i have as somebody gave it me and i never used it or looked at it, reason i dont know where it is lol, stashed away in the depth of the shed.

Yes it is a basic 1 in and 1 out fuel line through the filter, and there is no air leaks getting in to it.on these engine the pumps give the lift alone and pumping, so extra pumps are used unlike a HDi etc.

I dont want to use the tank as i want to empty it and clean it out if i can due to being stood with hardly no fuel in it.

I will check the water pressure tomorrow now as just got back in from a walk.

ah never though of that one, the chap has just popped around with the paper work, the old MOT`s stand correct with miles, and he said, and i have no reason to not believe him a si know him a little, he last ran it just before xmas 2014.

So i would think it will be soemthing simple like the fuel cut off as you say Rig Pig.

just remebered the fuel is getting through the pump to the injectors, so cant be the fuel cut off solenoid...can it?

it may be stuck just off the seat, pop it out and test it. Another thought - have you checked the air intake isn't blocked?

All the MOTs? Brother in law got a fourtrak with a genuine 50,000 miles on, one owner, etc, etc. MOT paperwork seemed to back it up till I told him that not all the mots were there it had in fact done 150,000 miles.

Not a lot of miles for year very possible it could be right though just seems to be a lot of problems for that type of mileage even if it has been standing. Can you contact the last person on the log book to confirm?

Is there a sudden demand for those old lumps that I don't know about? I have had several TD & NA XUD lumps from donor shells & scrapped them all as they are normally worthless otherwise.

don't go too mad on it, ldv's don't hold value very well ive seen 02 plate's go for just over 800 with mot, I knw you are going to convert to a camper but out of all the vans of similar size you can usually get 2 ldv's for the price of a transit same age, also the spares are stupidly priced

The air intake isnt blocked, checked that, even removed the filter. How do i test the solenoid? I think from my useless memory last time i messed with one of these i wired it up to to a dash switch, but niot sure about checking it over.

the odometer states a 0 first then the 21k so not been around the clock, unless it been fettled. i will check on the Guv though as you say, does still seem strange, the advisory was `slight lift in king pins` on last MOT.

I wont go mad snooper, i only paid scrap value so i can get my money back and more if the engine works, g box i can sell aswell, a few folk use them in there small 4x4 for off roading, i did the conversion a few years ago and they are excellent for that, low geared and soooo much fun in water use WVO if you got the Bosch pump aswell. Which i dont

The cutoff valve is screwed into the pump, it should make a nice click If you put 12v on it. Pull the air hose off the inlet next time you try a start and see what's going on. The next place I would look is the timing.

Hi, Turbo, the XUDs are quite popular the turbo more so especially with the Bosch pump. The LDV with the XUD came with the R380 g/box which is a development of the LT77, the RWD versions are sought after and can fetch as much as £300.

the fuel return is suspect on this engine and feeds back to the pump before the filter IIRC and as such can pull air back into the system.
you have gravity feed but what about the fuel return whereis that connected ?
we used to have one in 206 and it would stop, if run down to 1/4 tank because the return pipe became uncovered in the tank as the fuel level fell allowing the air to be drawn in there, I rerouted the fuel return straight back to tank and it was fine.
Just trying to remember i think there maybe a NRV in the return pipework somewhere that goes faulty.
