We shipped a load of gym equipment into the UK from Pakistan. When I lived in the Philippines chrome plating was dirt cheap. A motorcycle side stand, for example, cost the equivalent of 50 pence. It was fairly rubbish chrome, wouldn't last an English winter, but over there it was more than worth the paltry cost.
Back in the real world I was quoted £50 to chrome a similar sized item a couple of years ago. I painted it black instead.
Friend of mine near Telford recently had a pair of Austin Cambridge bumper overriders rechromed, think he paid £30 for them and they looked pretty good, I shall find out the name of the place some day in case I need some doing myself.
I've heard from a friend in the US that loads of metal plating businesses have closed down, due to the incredibly stiff regulations brought in over recent years.
They weren't quite that bad in the Phils. I was actually quite surprised just how quick chroming is. I had a brake pivot done once, but they didn't chrome the whole thing, just the exposed part, for some reason. I asked them to do the whole thing to prevent rust, and they took it away, I went for a beer, came back 30 minutes later and it was shiny all over.We shipped a load of gym equipment into the UK from Pakistan.
Never seen anything like it. They had chrome plated over rust
It was truly awful. My hands were covered in glitter any time I went near it.
The welds looked like they had used car batteries and coat hangers.
At around £75 per hour minimum basic fixed running costs for the plating plant , licences /permits HASAW insurance rental of property etc etc. £ 200 is a snip .I would have thought about £100
They do run a production line
Unlike most off the work we guys do on this forum
These guys are set up to re chrome
They must be on mega money
There are rather a lot of classic car enthusiasts who would disagree.Decorative chrome should be banned, which is happening? Only chrome functional sliding surfaces - forks/hydrualics...
Lead paint is banned. But you can still get permission to use it on listed buildings. The same idea for classic vehicles wouldn't be hard to implement. There are rather a lot of classic car enthusiasts who would disagree.
They will be dead in 60 years time so the greenies & HASAW guys will have won yet again .There are rather a lot of classic car enthusiasts who would disagree.
