Lazer eye surgery

I used to enjoy driving at night, I now try to avoid it, the modern HID & LED lights are awful. I have no problem with my eyes, it's just they are so bright & the cut off so sharp, so one moment they are ok, then suddenly bang instant dazzle.

About 14 years ago or so, it was raining and I was ankle high in pig poo. Luckily I had wellies on, I was feeding our pigs. one of them was attacking my wellies playfully and the little porker caught my knee, whilst bending down to softly say "don't do that" or similar, my specs fell off. it took a while to find my specs amongst the mire, while half a dozen piglets where jumping about. once retrieved and covered in copious amounts of pig poo I vowed to get my eyes lasered.

I looked around at various places in London where I was working and asked the same question, "where do you send me if it goes wrong?" The answer was Moorfields eye hospital, so I had it done there, it cost double but I thought it was worth it.

I had lasik, both eyes at once, one night of watering eyes but immediate sight improvements. I only wish I did it earlier. I'm now in my mid 50s and just started to need reading glasses frequently.

Can't really get much better than Moorfields. The professor there saved my sight after saying there was a 'very good chance' I'd lose it in that eye. Every time I visited for follow-ups he would greet me with "here comes the luckiest man I know".

The hospital is all re-vamped now. Very high tech.

Ive booked in for corrective surgery next month after mulling it over for several years, glasses do my head in, Have any of you lads/ ladys had it done?, Thoughts?

How old are you? I've thought about it a few times but by the time I had enough money to be able to afford it(nearer the end of my thirties than the beginning) I read it wasn't worth the effort because I'd need glasses going the other way soon.

I'm 36 this Time , the lazer people say that it's a perfect Time because my eyes have settled down.

Perfectly natural to have 'butterflies', but you'll be fine.

Might be a good idea to hold it in until after the surgery as your aim should be better...

You've reminded me that someone at work had it done a couple of years ago and she reckons it was well worth it

I would love to get it, I hate wearing glasses with a passion, in fact it's one of the biggest things that gets me down! Problem is I'm incredibly squeamish when it comes to my eyes

Very true I suppose. Had a bad do with a less than sympathetic foreign dr who's thick accent combined with my deafness combined into my nearly punching him while he dug around in my eye for a piece of slag with a needle, ever since anything to do with eyes makes me shudder

Dave i was always taught to close one eye with headlamps blinding you so as not to destroy your night vision in the other eye open it when glare has passed

I had it done about 15 years ago (lasik), when I was in my late 30s.
It made a huge difference to everyday life after wearing jam-jar-bottom glasses since my teens
It's the little things, like being able to see the alarm clock in the mornings without having to put glasses on first

For some reason, the surgeon was relaxed about one eye (so they could make it over or under safely), the other eye had to be exactly right. They did the relaxed eye first - left it a week to see how it healed - then adjusted the settings and did the other eye exactly right.

Thoughts & info :
I found it scary but very worthwhile.
Just after the operation I could easily read the big clock at the other end of our long office. When I left the job 2 years later I could still read it but not as easily.
Both eyes felt like they had fine sand in them for about a day after the operation, very gritty but not allowed to rub them. Unpleasant.
I was warned my eyes would start to go downhill in my 40s, they were right. My eyesight (now I'm 50) is ok for reading and driving but I'm expecting to need glasses sometime in the future.
Driving at night isn't fun. I used to get a halo effect around bright lights (headlights, brake lights), it's got better but not gone totally. 2 friends had their eyes done around the same time, they also have problems with night driving.
If getting your eyes done at different times, you will feel like a clown between the operations! You're not allowed to wear contact lenses for a few days before the operation so your choices are glasses with 1 lens removed or no glasses at all (blind as a bat in 1 eye?)
After both operations, I just wanted to hide in a dark room and have someone near. Arrange to have someone with you for 24 hours after if you can

Its a strange condition, where you really have to fight looking at the on coming head lamps. It doesn't bother me any more, I've learnt to live with it, slowing down has certainly helped.

Good tip on keeping one eye shut.

A man i worked with got it done because he was going in and out of a -35 blaster freezer and kept fogging up.
His wife told me he had problems with one eye afterwards and had to keep going back.
Ill keep wearing glasses as long as they keep allowing me to see without being too thick and heavy.
I dont fancy the odds of it going wrong, even if they are slim
