mixing concreat it' more like 14 bags of cement per dumpy bag of ballast?
never counted when I've been mixing mortat just do what the brickies say.... pretty sute it's a lot more than that too tho?

I don't think sharp sand only is the right mix for laying slabs, I used a mix of sharp and soft building sand on my sandstone paving and put a slurry on the back of every slab, hard work!
I have about 13 bags of MOT hardcore under mine and that's about 45 square meters worth.
Wackered it to death so hopefully nothing moves, we're on clay soil...
Dumpy bag is 600-800kg so I think it's about 6-8 bags for proper concrete
But dry lean bedding is a much weaker mix though.

Our towns market square has been ripped up for a much needed makeover, all the old slabs were cracked, loads of cobbles missing etc. The contractors are charging over a million quid and estimate 8 months to finish the job.
No wonder, I've only seen a few guys working on it, 4 yesterday, and only ever 3 before that.
8 Months means there are no functions possible until summer is over, whereas we usually have farmers markets and others stuff most Saturdays.

Yeah, it would be beyond common sense to do it by sections, so that the market could continue in a slightly reduced form.
Quite often with jobs like that throwing people at it will not make it go any quicker at all. A good gang of 3-4 blokes will usually get the same amount of work done as a mediocre gang twice the size.

One of the blokes is always on the phone, another is always sweeping stuff up... on rough ground, debris everywhere.....
The initial reason it was to take so long was that they were going to finish it in sections, 'to save disruption'... but they've got the whole lot totally dug up now, with crude footpaths through it.
No way can you find a good gang of 6-8. Especially as most companies do what in theory is the logical thing and every time they get a good gang of 4 all trained up they split them out into two gangs and put two fresh labourers with each. But then you forever end up running at half speed.
You can never ever complain about someone using a broom regardless. That is just a golden rule. If someone is prepared to use a broom you let them use it.
And obviously I don't know the exact circumstances but I get a lot of grief when on council jobs for being on the phone. The thing is I'm not avoiding work. I can easily spend over half the day on the phone for work. Not just on calls but all our paperwork is on a phone or tablet. And there is alot to fill out every day.

Called round four more contractors who all sounded disinterested and gave vague, "I'll call you next week", typical BS responses.
I can see me doing the entire job in the end.

i went round brother in laws he took his slabs up . the ground was fairly solid so scraped the sand back to the dolly i set it all up with wooden pegs for the falls using my water levels round the house we then filled it all in with dolomite and compacted it with my diesel compaction plate its massive with forward and reverse . it takes no prisoners 
he got a firm in to lay the random sandstone slabs and we saved a fortune the guy was impressed with the accuracy of the levels and hardly needed any dry mix sand and cement

might as well dig it out do the sub base and compact it yourself .its not rocket science as long as your fit enough

Resigned myself to doing that at least now since my back is still ok.
