Lawnmower deck repair

So I've been running a wee briggs classic lawnmower this past 2 years.

Bought it for a fiver and got the engine running but the deck is suffering

I notice two hairlines cracks. What's the right way to weld it can you just tack along it and rely on the filler metal of the wire then grind down a bit or does it need a small patch of sheet metal?

I only have a lidl fluxcore welder which I know isn't ideal for thin stuff especially rusted

You could try and grind and tack it - but I'd probably just patch over it.
Usually that's what I do, but then usually there’s fist sized holes in it, so not much choice.
Its only a mower deck, so don't overthink it too much.

if they're not to long just drill a 2-3mm hole at each end and forget it....the cracks wont grow unless u hit a tree....

Agreed prob overthinking will get it stitched up and get the grass cut lol

Probably too difficult to weld - what about grind back the worst areas and use some fibreglass filler or JB weld to get another couple of years out of it?

Thanks yeh that could work I've used fibre glass before with good results but fancied a go with the welder haha

Give it a try, if you blow holes in it, fashion up a patch plate to get back to solid metal.
No worries of gas shield loss, so pull back to lower the heat some.

ive done a few mower deaks repairs over the years they look tatty once done i cut a hole out shaped the metal put in place weld it in you will find you will need to do more than you expect clean the under neath and the top ance once done spray top and bottem with galv spray one i done lasted me 2 and a half years for a mates garden and once was not needed any more sold on face book for 30 quid and to be fair was as good as when id done it when i sold it

if your doing for your self and you got the time but do remember a 2ndf hand working mower cvan be bought from 40 quid facebook so do take a look at your time most ones i done where quite far gone and took 2 nights of playing to get them good working again

I bought a new Honda deck/service kit/cable for one of my mowers.

Whole lot was costly for sure - but mower does get another life.

Good point about the time it will take and not being particularly economical will have a think about it and see what comes up on marketplace

Such a shame when engine starts so easy. Also such ab easy wee mower to service lol

Hairline cracks on yours doesn't sound as bad as this one but if it helps to get you to have-a-go, then all good.
These are My first attempt at a proper repair, first time welding "real stuff" rather than practising on scraps etc...
I previously did a temp repair to BIL's mower with riveted plates in 2010 -
but by 2012 it needed welding, and luckily I had just bought one (SIP Gasless too ), so ...

Rust converter then a lick of paint (proper old hammerite) underneath
and new Aldi red paint on top, (no pics, sorry)
and it's still going 13 years later...

Looks really good defo more substantial than cracks I have but great repair and good to know its seen 13 years

Just done one similar to above, sadly the camera effed up, will try again shortly.

Before I got a MIG welder...I would stick weld them....

Oh for joy the smoke of packed dead white mold/grass set alight with 6011 rod......Poof right under the helmet
and into my eyes.
