Almost always the case.
On the plus side, I suppose it limits us from getting those bargains we don't really need, just because they're bargains.

Like i say, i did not really need the lathe either - just spotted it.
The only way to not buy 'bargains' that you dont really need is to not look...

You're definitely not alone Julian. We all do it. I ended up buying a Minor the other month just because it was reasonably close and fairly cheap, even though I'd let two go the past year to try and make some space in the shed. Gluttons for punishment is what we are.
I have resisted recently though. Concentrating on getting what's actually here sorted and running now rather than just keep adding more projects to the list. Unfortunately, space is finite.

This is the same lathe as mine,also named Henry Milnes. Solid machines these with the bonus of roller bearing on the headstock which runs in a bath of oil. making silly low money atm for what they can do

i tend to to buy stuff cos the price is right, thats how i picked up my massive (size not amps) mig at auction for a song
problem with bargains with scale is extras cost a lot more than normal. I have a 10 inch 3 jaw chuck and it needs replacing BUT I cant afford a new one of that size. I would like to get new jaws for the old check but not sure if you can buy extra hard jaws and how to identify the chuck.
Its that sort of problem that large bargains can give you.

When i got my lathe i took some ali bar about 2ft long placed it in the lathe and turned of 2mm all the way down i took a micrometer with me measured it before purchase all was fine bought it.

thats because most folk want something a reasonable size and single phase and cant transport anything bigger the only trouble at the mo is with big lathes the scrap price is worth more than the machine is worth
They can be but they are often tat. If any one knows a a D1-4 3 jaw I am all ears.....

Im where the lathe is at the moment, so thought id check on your question.
After searching the changewheels for anything that made sense (63,64,127,254) and, disappointingly, not finding anything, i realised i should check the lathe. Sure enough 127 fitted, so, yes, it will cut metric threads.

I'm very happy with my Colchester Student. Cheap as chips, lots of extras and thats what you want to be looking for when you buy a lathe: the tooling and accessories that come with it are EVERYTHING!
No one will sell you a tail stock for your lathe. A four jaw chuck will cost hundreds, travelling steadies, high speed threading attachments too. But if you can get them free with the lathe, that's where the true bargains can be had.

I bought a lathe tonight, a nice old Ace. I spotted it minutes after it went up on gumtree & called to arrange a viewing. Lucky I did as the guy said the phone never stopped with enquiries about it, but as I was first caller I had first dibs - very honest chap! He got at least 6 more calls whilst I viewed it! It was a nice old English/German machine and it's now mine for £250!! I'll start a post with pics when I get it home.
