Lathe Wiring help needed plz

Is that a contactor or switch? If it's a contactor then is that one end of the coil? (The other end will be the other small screw in between L1 and L2.)

The main power will come down from A B and C but it will also have its own small control circuit which energises the contactor.

to the right of C1 you can see a dark red round thing, two wires at the top, a blue and a black.
under that there is a white square thing with a number 4 next to it,

they are the main stop start buttons, I guessed that they were the small windings that hold the main switch in place when pressed.

am I right?????

Yeah I'd say so - have you a picture of the wiring diagram in the manual to see if we can identify this?

They won't be windings as such they will be normally open and closed contacts that control the contactor.

also, have been doing (trying) some reading on this,

apparently, the forward and reverse switch has a built in momentary start, (makes sense)

the three positions are up= forward with a momentary start, middle = stop, down =reverse with momentary start.

could going from lets say, reverse to forward cause it to trip the main fuse????

It was this forward and reverse switch that had me worried from the start as it tripped the main fuse at the guys house were I bought the lathe from

If the motor is still turning and you energise the "opposite" direction then it would almost certainly trip something. These are pure mechanical relays, so there is no built in logic to say "motor stopped" - it would literally try to energise the motor in the opposite direction. Starting a motor online from rest draws a lot of amps so it's not really surprising.

To be honest I'd not be overly worried by much even if it is tripping - as long as the motor is sound (the most expensive bit) then switchgear is not expensive if you need to replace it - though by the sounds of it you may be ok.

Managed to get the star & delta directions crossed some howBlown fuses 160a on machine and 250a ish back at the the switch room. Dust fell down from overhead, the lights dimmed and office staff came out to see if a bomb had gone off.

I remember the day a agency electrician fitted a replacement motor to a press about 45kw. Managed to get the star & delta directions crossed some howBlown fuses 160a on machine and 250a ish back at the the switch room. Dust fell down from overhead, the lights dimmed and office staff came out to see if a bomb had gone off.

I remember wiring up a big 2 speed fan motor on a flotation dryer (75 kw ish - maybe more??). The dryer and motors shipped separately as did the electrical cabinets - we ran the wires between the cabinet and motor but there was obviously something amiss in the cabinet wiring (iirc they had a wire crossed between the low and high speed contactors). I ran through the usual commissioning tests and the motor started in low speed fine, direction was ok so I pushed the button to run it in high speed, the lights dimmed the belts squealed and then everything went black !!! I wasn't popular that day the machine next to it was in production and it tripped that too. Took the operators about 3 hours to start up again - oops.

I know the feeling you want the earth to open up and swallow you up, at least it was someone else that caused the error.

Looking at the photos of the wiring Id say that has been modified in some way, perhaps to fit an additional stop foot bar or something.

Why, looking closely some wires are oldish looking silver cores. Others are bright copper.

If it were me Id wire it up and test it. Trying to reverse a running motor is madness.

1st question does the contactor operate or is the rubber bend holding the contacts closed?

It does operate, but only when its plugged in.

first pick (in this lot) is the suds pump wiring,

3rd pic is motor wiring then some of the motor

I am going top give the motor a good clean and re-grease, then Ill wire the base stand to the motor and see how it runs and test the stop start, forward reverse, and two speed motor switches
