Another lathe to look out for is a Raglan little john.

I use to have a Raglan mill. Athough basic the quality of finish was Rolls Royce

as far as I'm aware the main diff is that the S7 has a thread cutting gearbox as standard but have seen 1 or 2 without the g/box.......
there is a Boxford lathe around the same size but only a little cheaper but worth the difference ?????
I sold my 1'st S7 to buy a Colchester Student 6" but regreted it very quickly so had to buy another S7.......

as they say u pays ur money........
all depends what u wanna do......but what ever u start out with job wise u'll regret not having a gearbox for thread cutting and feeding......and u'll out grow it anyway unless ur making clocks......hence my buying the Colchester.......

u'll c Warco advertised but all I seem to c on forums is that they are always in trouble....Chinese.....

All the Chinese (warco, Chester etc.) are very much built down to a price, not up to a standard - from new, think of 'em as a kit of parts to take apart, fettle and reassemble, modify to make them accurate and usable - by which time you could have spent a little bit more on a used "western world" lathe and had something that was likely to last a lot longer and would be a joy to use - I bought a big'un (Holbrook C13) for less than a secondhand Chinese minilathe, Holbrook also did a nice bench lathe (the C8 / CB8) which was about as good as a small lathe gets - rare as rocking-horse droppings but they occasionally come up on EBay for not a lot, it's a nearly unknown manufacturer...

Myfords are quite good for what they are, but they are a small, lightweight machine more suited to model engineering or prototyping than any heavy or production work. Hell of a lot of accessories made for them over the years, though!

the ml7 price is the asking price in a good area even better if it has both 3 and 4 tooth chucks also another point of 2 different sizes pref screwed onto ml7

if you can get hold of the moving steady even better as other 2 pieces are easy to get

myfords hold the prices well and plenty of renew parts that dont cost the earth unlike the other expensive parts for well built but cheaper to buy laths

boxfords , colchester and raglan lathes there parts are much dearer than myford parts thats if you can get hold of them could be years for a single part

The Super 7 has a much better (higher) speed range with spindle bearings to cope, more powerful motor as standard, a self ejecting tailstock, clutch, longer cross slide, better top slide with full 360 degree rotation, etc, etc. Also power cross feed with the later machines.

I am off to look at one this Friday so maybe i will be bringing back a myford ML7....

At that price i would buy it & see how you get on. You will always be able to move it on when you find its too small to do what you want. My first lathe was an early Super 7 & it was a good lathe that did some good work. I always found the piddling small hole through the headstock a pain though!
Lot of people get hung up on the name Myford or some othe makes, truth is there are a lot of seriously good mahines out there often for not a lot of money. Tony Griffiths website is a mine of useful info with a great archive, www,lathes.co.uk,
