Hi lads, I'm hoping I can pick the Collective Brain to solve a problem with my bench-top R&A lathe.
found the tool was moving when introduced to the work-piece and discovered this
Obviously, I'm going to need to replace the post and assumed it was held in the slide on a taper, but a pal cast some doubt on that [saying a taper in cast iron would be unlikely] and suggested it was retained by pins. I stripped the paint off and found this, which looks like two tiny pins......
The underside of the slide looks like this
When I got the lathe I suspected the nut looked 'home made' so it may have been a bit of a bodge [ignoring the fact that I might have overdone the tightening.... ]
Does anyone have any idea as to how this is all held together? It can't be simple magic.....
I've tried a bit of heat and penetrating oil but clearly don't want to resort to the 'big persuader', what with cast being involved. I'm now of the mind that I might have to try drilling out the tiny pins, and if that doesn't work, then cut off then drill through the main post. Any suggestions/ideas welcome, there's no panic as I'm going away tomorrow for possibly a week.
Also, do you know how the flat plate is attached to the cast body? Is it possible that it's all one with the post?
Thanks in advance.
