lathe problem ?? 7x14 mini lathe

ok i have a one of these lathes , and there is a problem with it ,,
when its running it sounds like a old car hunting for fuel.
i dont know how to explain it really ,, the rev gauge seems to say that the revs are stable, but it sounds like its .......... turning on and off ,, but with about half a second between on and off .. or more like rev up and slow, the rev up then slow , this is continuous and even more noticeable in the high rev band,
i will try and get a video of it tommorrow

i dont even know what to look for ,, but i will take the cover off and have a look ,,

I had a similar fault with a meddings flott variable speed bench drill, hunted up & down the rev range & stopped & started intermittently.
It turned out that there was an optical sensor that reads the speed from a segmented disc on the motor spindle and it was filthy with carbon dust from the brushes. Quick clean & it worked perfectly.
However i also know someone who had a warco variable speed lathe & had no end of trouble with it until he gave up & scrapped it

Low-end lathes have cheap speed controls. The Sherline I had use basically a light dimmer to control the speed.

I replaced the controller with one made by Minarik and it completely changed the operation of the lathe.

If you can't get a stable speed or it has no torque at low speeds, look at getting an industrial controller. Not, cheap but they appear on ebay (that is where I got mine cheap.)

To fix this fault turn the IR pot control on the speed control circuit board anticlockwise 1/8 of a turn at a time until the hunting is corrected. Make sure the power to the lathe is off when making the adjustments.

i went to the shed today and adjusted the IR pot, its running great now,

i have a couple of adjustments i need to do that i will need help with, but i will start new threads for them later,
