Lathe Prices

After looking for a lathe and then spending the money for it on other tools i looked on gumtree and saw this local

Does that seem a good price as it is only round the corner?

I have exactly the same ML7 paid £450 for mine, £500 doesn't seem out of the way. Make sure you check the slides, bed & headstock bearings for excessive wear. Walk away if any found can be an expensive hobby putting that sort of wear right.

depends what ya wanna do.......even a rough 1 will do good work.......I'd happily spend my money on it.......it's a no brainer.......
always said tho it's best if it comes with a few or a lot of tooling........
u'll spend more money on the tooling than the lathe.......

It's not to out the way. Myford do hold there money. Plus side is some parts are still available and plenty on the bay. Stedies are usually the two items that are missing .

If you have not checked out an ML7 before, best give it a good checkover: wear on the bed, lift the headstock belt cover and check for broken gear teeth, put a 6" length of large diameter bar in the chuck and feel for play in the headstock bushes. Wind slide and cross slide fully in and out and check for tightness/backlash. All parts are available, so even if there is some wear or damage it can relatively easily be sorted. All bargaining points if buying. You may well already know all this.

Price looks ok but if been on gumtree for 20 days without a sale, you may be be able to negotiate on price.

I use my ML7 almost every week and do not know what I would do without it. In last 2 weeks I have made nylon bushes to adapt a Passat gearbox selector that was a different size than that on the original gearbox. and machined out a 1 in 12 1" taper bore in a bronze adjustable pitch propeller centre for a yacht.

Providing it’s not a dog you’ll never lose money on it.
If times get hard further down the line there is no doubt if advertised properly you’ll get more than that back for it.

Looking at the ad, it's got the starter tooling, chuck, faceplate, tailstock drill chuck, a few cutting tools - enough to get playing while you save the pennies for more (you'll always want more - quick-change toolpost is a no-brainer) - but check whether the change gears are with it as you're going to want to cut threads and it doesn't have a gearbox (lathes.co.uk probably lists the standard set, and you'll want metric translating gears, the workshop practice book No 3, screwcutting in the lathe, by Martin Cleeve, has all the metric translations worked out with the minimum of added gears)

I work on the principle that the time to buy a 'bargain' [not referring specifically to the Myford here, although it's a decent price if it's a good one] is when you don't need it - because when you DO need it, the 'bargain' is gone and the item may not even be available any more......

Myfords are a nice machine but if you have space you can get a much more capable machine for £500. I bought a Sable for £200 with a good stash of tooling.

Well mine was.....
But sometimes it pays to travel, I had to rent a tail lift van and drive to Romford (from Norwich) to get my mill, but it was still worth it, I haven't seen another bargain like it since.

Yup, it can be worth the trouble, I usually rent a 4x4 and a "plant access trailer" (low deck, drop down tailboard ramp and 4 large wheels) total about 100-120/day which lets me move up to two and a half tons - now ive had some practice i moved the 2-ton mill single handed, no strain, no injuries and a bargain!


That's starting the trip home to Surrey from Northampton - I still got the rep in his red Vectralike cutting up 7 tons of me on the M25 of course...
