Go with the three phase motor. It'll give a smoother running machine and finish to match. It'll also last a lot longer than a single phase.
You can get Variable Frequency Drives for three phase as well, sometimes quite cheaply as there not as popular as the single phase ones.

Yup I couldn't believe the difference putting a single phase motor on my lathe made. The 3-phase was smooth as silk whereas with the single you can feel a tremble through the machine.

a three phase is always at the same speed where as a single is constantly revving and free running

didnt realise would make that much difference to ruunning vibriations

ill go for a 3ph then but what abotu speed and horse power 3/4hp and 1400rpm or 2800rpm , the back gear all works so could slow it down that way as well but which motor is recommended?

a steam engine might be a good start! Have you considered a inverter drive that will give you variable speed and safety such as DC brake

yes and no its a tight budget to get it up and running so cheap as poss kinda just whack a motor on it and go

go for the slower one that will be closest to original i think. Don't know much about laths but i think for most stuff you use a slowish speed

That little machine would be happy with a 1/2 or even 1/3hp machine I think. 3/4hp seems a bit much.
