I've got a Harrison M250 lathe, which has been loaned to me by my father in law. It's in great condition and has never really given any problems before.
A couple of times in the last week it has started to make a grinding noise, that sound like gears not meshing properly. It's barely noticeable in the 40 and 90 rpm gears, but as you go up the speeds it makes a horrible grinding noise. However at the highest speed it doesn't seem noticeable at all.
When it first happened I had a good look around the lathe, took the top cover off and checked the headstock gears and nothing looks out of place or worn. Then for some reason it just stopped and all was fine for a couple of days. This evening it started again and as it was late I just turned it off and walked away.
The oil in the screwcutting gearbox is a bit low and looks quite dirty through the sight glass. I'm going to change it tomorrow anyway, but is it likely that this is the problem?
I've been turning down some bolts for a custom application and turning down some 70mm round bar, but I've not done anything that I think could have damaged it. The parting tool grabbed a couple of times in the 70mm stock, but isn't there a clutch that prevents any damage occurring?
I'm really hoping that I've not done anything to damage it, as it's a great bit of kit and it's obviously not mine, but under my care.
If it's still doing it after the oil change I'll take a video and post it up.
Thanks
Jon
