The half-nut closer is unusual - not seen one behnd the apron like that like that.

I suspect its a guard to keep the cut filings from fouling the leadscrew.

I have no idea about lathes, so not sure which part you are refering to.
I'll have to have a google around and learn a bit more terminology I reckon
