Ronan try some local suppliers carriage is pricey even on 1ltr which tend to go for £9.
Been having mine from Hughes and Holmes last 13 years, now bought out by James Lister. www.lister.co.uk 1 gallon or 5ltrs think it is gone up in November to £17. Its a Morris oils from Shrewsbury water soluable and dont stink years on end.

We use some stuff I think is called Akwesol 540.. maybe.. just slosh some in a bucket of water till it looks like milk and away we goooooo
If you are not exaggerating a bit, its a very fine way to ruin a machine tool long term. Someone sat working out the mixing ration for a very good reason. A coolant is not only devised to act as an efficient coolant but also not to degrade the machine tool. It's not what you can see where the damage is done, It's what you cant see. Its a very bad practice.

i use rocol it might be over priced and theres probably oils cheaper that are just as good but your guaranteed quality. as said the ratio of the mix is importantA few years ago i did a lathe safety course for work at Chelsmsford college, their machine shop used a synthetic cutting oil, Makron 440 if i remember.
The workshop and the machines were spotless. I found an equivalent in Crowncut 810p it works well & lasts, also the machine stays clean & rust free. I think unless you are using the machine a lot soluble oil goes off too quick.

I use synthetic soluble oil in my machines, and I dont get to use them nearly enough for my liking (maybe 6-8 hrs a week), but the coolant is stable and doesnt seem to go off or suffer tramp/algee problems. I was using gulf hydrocut but I switched to another brand recently (id have to go look what) and run that in the surface grinder.
You can buy cheap chinese refractometers for measuring mixture ratio now on ebay. You won't get rusting running soluble oil unless you have the oil/water percentages way off base.
Now if I could only find a way to stop the surface grinder turning its coolant this horrible grey colour every few months

I use Hysol, works fine and no problems with smell or algae.
have to admit I don't measure it when I mix it, I use the water from my dehumidifier[5L] and I pour a cup of Hysol in with it. Only problem has been forgetting to wash the cup, I am told it tasted terrible!
I tried neat oil and it wasn't that cool...
A bloke near me runs a shop full of, well he went out of business a year ago, pre-war cam auto lathes, they run pretty much 24 hours a day. He uses an expensive semi-synthetic neat oil. He centrifuges his swarf, I got oil from the tank next to the centrifuge, for free. New oil he wanted 8 quid a litre for!
I used it on my hacksaw, the blades wore quicker than using water based coolant and the metal coming off the saw was hot. I used the neat oil on my lathe and on heavy cuts I was filling the garage with smoke, again everything was very hot. J&L were flogging Exol neat oil for something like 35 quid for 25L.
