Lathe backplate blanks.

Evening guys.
Anyone know where I can get steel blanks.
220mm diameter.
50mm thick.
Need to turn up some lathe chuck backplates.

Up to 450mm diam bar here in cast.

Can't find blanks in that size anywhere. Found a few at 200mm

Isn’t cast meant to be better for some reason?

Can’t say I like the thought of either going to shrapnel in the 8ft wide workshop I have my lathe in.

It will depend on the top speed of the lathe as to the material choice, I don’t fully know the ins and outs, but I have always wondered about this. When reading about different lathes, ductile iron is often mentioned as the required material for chucks fitted to high speed lathes.

But if it’s for a big old lathe with a low top speed then it probably won’t really be an issue.

Cast = Less 'ringing' but also less in way of top speed as worse in tension

Mild Steel = opposite of all the above
