This thread does nothing for my fear of anything remotely new (& not helped by the steady throughput of newish, reasonable mileage bits of engine that go through where I work).
I spent ages nearly 2-years-ago looking for a lowish miles pre-Euro5 vantage convert to a camper. I eventually bought an 80k miles Renault Master dci100, 2008 (no DMF or DPF, but still too many electronics for my nerves).
I'm not sure I'd have any faith in newer stuff - even though I'm aware some can run to impressive mileages reliably. As someone who'd have to buy used, stuff now seems so fragile unless meticulously maintained.... & you just cannot have trust that any used diesel will have got that (no matter what its got stamped in the service book).
2.2 Ford engine? I wonder why that would be better, could it be the Transit ECU?Our Euro 5 PSA group engine in the Kuga has been bullet proof.
The later cars and vans seem to be crippled with emissions related tat, and the wet belts..

The thing about Jap quality is you can see it in front of you, but the trick is, that quality continues right on in where you can't see it too.
What would you buy for a 3.5ton van...?

I'd still stick with Sprinters. Even the new ones. I used to drive a 21-plate 317 luton, good spec with air-con, auto, air suspension. It was a beautiful van.
But of any, it'd be the 2013-2018 906 facelift, thet're still my favourite and in my opinion the best.
My one getting it done:

I been having MWB semi high roof RWD Euro5 VW 2.0 Crafters - I got one low mileage 2010 taxed at the moment - plus I got one 2014 in the yard with slightly higher mileage on it - that I have been "tinkering with" ready to put back on the road (but like all my other projects they are slow going).

I used to have a 2007 2.5 Crafter. While it was a very nice van and very well-spec'd it was spectacularly unreliable and always needed something. I know it was a fluke but the thing was a never-ending source of problems. I sold it and bought a 2013 Sprinter 313 which was utterly reliable and a beautiful van.

I wish i never sold it as i've not found another one as nice.
