Late change in life

Allright guys,

Nearing 40 had an interest in welding for many years done some stick over the last 6 years as maintaining an old pickup truck required

Recently got a Mig and recently started a college course doing the welding, felt a bit odd being old was expecting to be oldest in class but supprised I was middle of the pack. Tutors at the college are really excellent which is great.

Lookig forward to sharing the journey hopefully become a real employed welder in the not to distant future, wish I pursued it years ago to be honest

I used to go to an evening engineering sessions at local college - basically an excuse to use the machines for whatever project you wanted I was youngest there at mid 40's with some of the fellows in 80's and one early 90's ! I learnt a lot from the older members and because a close friend with one who is 20 years older than me. You are never too old to learn

40 ain't 'old'.

16-40 = 24 yrs 40-65=25yrs. You're not even half way.

Not old, you are a Youngster, there is someone on here that’s in their 80’s & has just bought a mig as he wants to learn something new. I would think you are below the Forum average age. Welcome to the forum, lots of good advice on here.

Welcome onboard. I changed career at 40, I'd been hobby blacksmithing, went to college for 12 months to iron out all my self taught mistakes and learn how to weld properly. Went full time until I retired, do a bit still, helps keep me distracted since my wife died.

Aged 42 bored wifey was nagging me to try something new.
She bullied me into a night class in gas welding.
Immediately I was hooked.
Pa stumped up for my first welding gear.
I played with sculpture to get a feel for it.
Two years later I quit social work to see if art could support me. Knowing full well there was no chance, but better than killing my boss and half my colleagues.
18 years later I'm still going; and effectively unemployable. But happy.
Good luck; who knows what it will lead to.

Chopping up and rebuilding old scrap bikes will teach you a lot about 3D structures. Can be fun as well.

The wire fish on your wall just flashed back a happy memory of making a similar one. It was my first Metal Shop project in Junior High School back in 1966; the start of a lifelong interest in metal working.

At 40 you are not old , definetely .
But , be prepared , if you want to become a professional welder , you'll need to spend hours and hours and hours on learning things , experience only comes with time .
I started to work at 20 , after school , in my dad shop and now I'm 31 , learnt A LOT and still learning .
It's a never ending process .
