Anyone ever done this?

I saw someone doing it last week but he looked like he was concentrating and I didn’t want to be that annoying bloke. I do a bit of measuring up on site for fitted furniture from time to time - it would never warrant anything as fancy as this but I’m curious all the same. Does it go wrong much?

We have something similar but a bit more complicated. Used for scanning incident sciences to create 3D plans / drawings. Only ever seen it used inside

I’ve no idea mate, I’m rubbish with anything computer. Our boffins showed me the system set up in one of our labs. When we had come back from lunch it had made a pretty decent drawing on one of their PC screens

Few sheets of hardboard are a fraction of the cost and you can tell at a glance it's correct

I've seen them used and they work ok but the first moment you will know there's a cock up will be when the worktop doesn't fit.

Yeah, Measure and template using the traditional way

This technology is good for quickly measuring and mapping out rooms etc

Hmmm. Seems to be decent paying jobs for the surveyors operating them, but reading up a little even then they check their measurements with something more traditional. Even a template has to get turned into CAD at some point if it’s going off to a factory for manufacture. Interesting stuff. I’ve drawn up my house in 2D CAD over the past few years in great detail, the fanciest tool I’ve got is a laser measure.

Perhaps I need to get out more.

laser tape and crossline laser are as high tech as i get. both are checked regularly against analog equivilents. both are very usefull

The design office at work has a specialist firm they get in occasionally, they use a laser scanner thing that will scan a room and the stuff in it, producing a 3d map of everything that can later be used to assist with adding more machinery, pipework etc.

I imagine it's very similar to what Parm is talking about.
