So what kind of price was it? I have no idea of new prices as I have never bought new.

I would not have got any change from £40K as i am no longer vat registered.

Ok, was kind of thinking £30K plus but again I have never bought new so it was just a kind of notion I had.

Personally I would look for a good second hand one from the likes of Tos, Tarnow, DSG, Ikegai etc etc.

Value for money would be a cheap old well made lathe that's seen little use and been cared for. They do exist and if you're not in a mad rush and can travel you'd be about 39k better off! Or still around 34k better off if buying from a dealer!

The DSG on the Phil Geesin site is around the 7 grand mark. It is reasonably well tooled too.

I agree a type 17 DSG (with a longer bed) in good condition would be a contender if I had 3phase. Unless I am mistaken I thought most of the type 17's had a 15KW motor which is a bit much for a RPC using a shared 100amp single phase connection.

I've got a type 17 DSG with a 6ft bed, got it on ebay for £450 (I think £450.. it was a while back... it was about that much)

it's 12hp, so 9kw and yes 3 phase... but aren't all big lathes going to be 3 phase ?

for the amount you'll save you could have 3 phase installed!

or buy a good 3 phase converter?

Those big DSG's go for silly money don't they. I mean silly as in cheap. I guess because they are so big, no one has the room or facilities to move and the power requirements are generally outside mist amateur means.

I didn't know that until after I picked i up - no wonder we struggled :-o

Well you will have the same power problems for any big lathe. But buying a cheaper one allows plenty for you to buy a different motor, inverter, converter or perhaps a three phase supply!

Thanks for the input chaps but I reckon that some of you must live in a town where 3 phase is a viable option. I am lucky (view point depentant) enough to live where the only thing I hear when I wake up is the sparrows farting - the downside to that luxury is getting 3phase is not a viable option unless you feel 30K + is reasonable. There are plenty of larger lathes out there with a 10HP motor that can be run from my rotary phase converter but they are mostly imports, hence my original question about Chinese/taiwanese lathes.

thing to remember is, that's the max the motor can draw, at the split second just before it stalls because you're pushing it so hard

if you work a 5hp lathe and a 50hp lathe identically they'll use the same amount of power
(or close enough)

to me, sub £1k lathe and sub £1 inverter is a hell of a lot better than a 40k lathe

unless you have enough work to work the lathe non stop and guarantee making you're 40k back in a short time

Apparently, it'd still be 20k+ to drop a couple of extra wires...

Same with me. Mine even has the breaker on it... I could hook a few lines on and then reconnect it

only costs 1500e in France, subsidized price, as log as you don't go over 36kVA. After that it's based on evaluation and cost based quote rather than a fixed rate tariff.. at that price it would be rude not too...
