laquer or not

Hi guys,just painted my lads moped with cellulose ,am i better cutting and polishing the paint or applying laquer ,especially interested in the tank area,am i correct in thnking cellulose itself is petrol resistant?. If anyone recomends laquer,any ideas what kind? not sure i want to use halfrauds rattle cans (petrol reistant laquer)would feel happier using spray gun,but don't currently have an air fed mask so no 2pack suggestions please.Please help! many thanks .....gav

Phoned paint supplier asked if a cellulose bike tank should have a petrol resistant laquer?she paused and said "probably,but we don't sell one!"........surely someone can help ?.......car finishes don't nomally "melt " pretty sure they were just celly ,,,all viewpoints welcome!....

Celly is OK with petrol. You might get the odd stain that can be polished out. I've painted bike tanks with cellulose in the past without trouble. Also I've been known to have leaky Renaults in the past.

Hi Gav,

If you are going to apply laquer (it sounds like you have decided not to though) try and get all the swirls & cobweb scratches out BEFORE applying the laquer because after it's been laquered any swirls etc will be locked in........Autoglym SRP by hand will do a good job if they are very light, if a bit deeper then best move onto something like Meguiars ScratchX, same process with both products pour onto an applicator pad and rub in straitght lines with mendium pressure.

As for a last step product something like Collinite (see link), a couple of coats will give good protection against petrol but you would be advised to wipe off as soon as it happens and it will give great protection for over the winter........colly is one of the longest lasting waxes out there, another good combo is Autoglym Super Resin Polish followed by Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection, there are other waxes, sealants and combinations of both that will give different effects but the differences are minimal really.......the link: -

If you are using a polisher then you should be aware that these can put scratches INTO the paint, the way to go is as follows: -

With the product on the polishing pad start the machine on speed 1 to spread the product then increase speed to speed 3 for a few passes, then down to speed 2 for another few passes and wipe residue off job done........never run the polisher at high speed as this is when the scratches are instilled into the paint.........just my 2p worth

Thanks slab,i would have laquered but not from rattle cans ......will prob go down the autoglym route as its more readily avaiable locally and have used it before......i believe its normal to wait a week or 2 before t cutting would you recommend polishing first (to protect the paint)then cutting in a couple of weeks and re-applying the wax?many thanks for your reply,,,,,,,,,gav

As stated celly will stain but can be polished out, although there comes a point where theres no celly left to polish, you can get a 2 pack non iso clear this works well against fuel when cured (if yer using over celly do a test panel first)

Do not use a large boyracer shops (first name hal second name car manufactures ) petrol resistant laquer as its made from the devils arsegrapes and can craze like a pig on acid randomly hth

As a rule of thumb Gav you need to wait 30 to 60 days before sealing the paint this allows the paint to harden naturally, in this weather I would wait at least 5 to 6weeks........if you don't wait you will end up with what we call "fisheyes" that's loads of tiny blisters which look rubbish and it's a paint defect which can only be put rite by another re-spray.

The above does not apply to paint that has been hardened in an over in that case you can polish/seal/wax straight away with no complications

Thanks for the advice lads ,much appreciated,i'm figuring on my lad dropping or scratching it so i guess it will have to be redone at some stage ,previous owner had painted in repsol colours, white .orange. black.which had run and smudged due to petrol spillage,hence my questions .......Gav
