Lap welds

Hi all i am having a problem with my lap weld at the moment i am studying at college. Where i have to do test pieces currently doing a lap weld on mild carbon steel 7mm x 150mm long x 50mm wide
My tutor says we have to travel the torch in a straight line and not use a cursive or horse shoe it in ie weave technique
the problem is leg is not consistent the same width and there's a bit of cold lap on the toe any suggestions

Hello, are you allowed to grind the steel if so grind the top piece so it is angled/bevelled slightly this will help with the toe. Take your time and well pool will fill out and help consistency. I take this is a horizontal weld you are doing.

Hi Thanks Landynut and Biffa I dont know about being allowed to grind and yes Landynut it is horizontal i am allowed to do a stop start
but with me once, i strike up i like to keep going Biffa thanks to you two i will try it out and supply pics next week

By back stepping I meant moving the tourch forwards 2 steps back 1step forward 2 back 1 etc. very similar effect to the cursive e's but you travel in a straight line. However as your doing it in the vertical it wont be of much use

Hi Biffa thanks for the imput i am doing the lap weld flat so i will try your technique when i am back in college next week
