Lamp post “alternative” for drive/large garden area.

I’ve been looking around online for a lamp post for the drive/front area of home. The original ones of about 9 feet or more high are attracting silly money. The thing is, I don’t need an original and the replica ones I’ve seen are only about 6 feet tall. I don’t just want to stick a scaffolding tube in the ground with a lantern on top. A replica would be ok if they were a few feet taller. Any suggestions?

Build a plinth out of brick or stone.

That is one way of increasing the height. I`d want it to blend in I guess. I could cast something in concrete and paint it the same colour as the post maybe.I`ve not viewed the replica ones in person, but if they are hollow plastic type material I would maybe fill the botoom 18 inch with concrete then set it inside the concrete base??

and all u need now is a decent light to go on top that dont look like a factory light

Use around 25 tr old oil container, about 20" ish tall, plastic waste pipe down middle out the side at bottom for cables, stick some re bars into the ground first, around the circumference 50mm in from the edge, fill with concrete.
Then strip off the plastic tub when hard, paint to suit, bolt look alike post to the top
or if you dont mind fabricating old pub co2 or oxy cyl cut bottom off weld disc to it, similar at the top where it radiuses down to match your look alike

I let lucky, bid on an old cast iron lamp post that was local to me on Ebay, I won it and when I looked closer at the description it was for two both now fitted and working.

I found one with a 6 sided lantern advertised in my local Tesco. At a price well below what they sell for on ebay/reclamation yards. Not finished installing it yet....

I used to make those and flog them. Don't make the common mistake of trying to use 90° angle iron for the verticals, coz its not 90°.

I bought one last year at Murton farm auction (ylc.co.uk) for about 11 quid - a cast iron one, with electric lamp. still had the gas pipe inside as well.

you can get some good bargins there
only problem i had was that auction 1 starts at 10 am auction 1a starts 2pm auction 2 starts 10-30 auction 3/4/5/6 you end up running from one field to another and missing what you wanted in both auctions

what u do there is go with a few mates tell em what u want to pay max and they bid for u and saves u been in all 3 at same time

took my father and a couple of the guys that worked for us
they ended up in the bar

and i ended up running from one auction to the other

been there. done that. arrived 7am.
five hours walking round/twiddling thumbs. Then 6 items in three auctions - at completely opposite ends of three different fields - all within 20 minutes, then another 2 hour wait for the final lot.
